This past week I picked up a lot of estate pipes from a friend who received them from an Episcopal Priest who was obviously a serious pipe smoker. My friend is not, so when he found out that I've taken up the pipe, he offered them to me for a price to be negotiated. We made the deal for between $5.00 & $10.00 per pipe and I think I came out OK. All need restoration work. The unmarked meerschaum has a couple of cracks at the end of the stem, the Le Peltier is a pipe I know nothing about, the Jobey Fawn 680 has some stem damage beyond chatter. Most are identifiable to some degree. The cream of the crop seem to be a Dunhill Shell from, I think, 1942, and a Saseini 4 Dot Regent. While I will try my had at restoration on most of them, the Dunhill and Saseini will likely be sent out for professional work. Given my vocation is the same as the former owner, I feel some connection to these pipes.

Well done, my friend. You should end up with a stable of good smokers from that lot.

I have a good feeling about that silvermounted bent bulldog on the left. Any stampings on it?

The green pipe, LePeltier, is an American maker specializing in double walled clay pipes.

Good for you! I hope you come to enjoy fixing them up and restoring them as much as I do.

You've done well...get them cleaned up and get ready for some great smokes. A 1942 Dunhill should be a great smoking pipe as well as the Sas and the GBD.

Kelly, looks to me like you did very well. They should all clean up very nicely. Congratulations on your purchase and enjoy ALL of those pipes for many years of smoking pleasure 👌👍👍

I have a good feeling about that silvermounted bent bulldog on the left. Any stampings on it? It is stamped: (I think; some of it is not totally clear) Lorenzo ITAL(Y?) Ravenna Sta?
The silver mount is marked Sterling Silver and I suspect was not original as there is a visible crack in the mortise and the band covers up a portion of the stamping. The stem is marked with a cursive capital "L"

Oh, darn, just a repair band then. I was hoping it would turn out to be something rare. Lorenzo makes perfectly OK pipes but they're not particularly collectible.

Congrats and Enjoy. It does seem fitting that you've become the custodian of them. +++

Decisions, decisions, what will you do first?
It looks like those pipes have been well smoked and I'm curious to see how much effort you have in getting the oxidation completely removed from the stems.
The latest batch of heavily smoked pipes I bought almost broke me! It took me forever to get the oxidation out of the stems.

Yea, the stems are seriously oxidized, a nice icky green color with copious amounts of crud. It should prove interesting. I re-watched George's Back to Black videos last night, to remind myself of the best technique. It's time to start stocking up on wet/dry sand paper! I need to get some new buffer wheels too.

Fabulous! What a nice collection at a nice price.
Before busting your hump on removing oxidation, give each stem a light coating and rub with mineral oil. Then after smoking and evaluating what you like you can use some elbow grease if removing all oxidation is important. Meanwhile you'll have covered it up and prevented further oxidation.
