Hello to all, I have a question about a pipe that I have. I have tryed to find info. on it with no luck. It is a cavalier style according to another site I surched on, Smokingpipes.com. It says in the glossary cavalier, an old and distinctive shape built around providing a moisture-trap where condensation can collect out of the smoke-stream. Bowl shapes may vary, but the cavalier is easily recognized by its deeply-bent configuration and a shank that extends past and underneath the bowl itself. This portion of the shank is traditionally drilled all the way through, fitted with a removable cap at the end, and serves as the moisture-trap. I know I saw a pic. of it on line but I cant find the artical. It has a milatery style stem and, I believe it is a full bent stem, I do not have the stem but used one from another pipe I have. Im hopeing that you can help me out. Thank you for your replys. Herman

Are you saying you're not able to get a pic now or you won't ever?
Welcome to the forum, BTW.

This is a Weber Cavalier pipe, can you find any markings on the pipe that you have? so we may be able to tell you who made the pipe?

first off thank-you all for responding. Yes Yohanan that is the type of pipe but the shank is more upright, mabey 10 too 15 degrees from the bowl. On it is The Gills or Eills stamped, also on the coller it has a anker a star and a eagle? I hope this helps for I dont know how to lode a pic. But when I see my doughter she will do it for me. I am putter illerit but she built her own putter. thanks again. Herman

I believe the anchor on the collar, indicates Birmingham, England manufacture for silver. Is the collar silver? I am guessing that it is. The star and the eagle may indicate further, who the silversmith was and production date or era. For the band or collar anyway.

This may help: Once your photos are on a photo hosting site (such as Imgur.com; Postimage; Dropbox, etc. Photobucket), or on virtually any site, such as eBay; Amazon; Pinterest; Pipe retailer; you-name-it, select the full sized image, then Control-click (Mac) or Right-click (Windows) on the image itself, then choose "copy image location" or similar words. Now paste that URL (the full web address, which should end in .jpg or .png) into the IMG box (the one with a landscape in the tiny thumbnail, third from left in bottom row) in the Reply window.

I believe the anchor, star, and eagle represent the C.P.F brand. also known as the Colossus Pipe Factory, but that's just my opinion, and I can be wrong.

Hello all.
I am at my daughter's apartment and she is loading the pictures for me. The first pipe is the one we are discussing. I did look up the Colossus Pipe Factory and it did have the insignias on there that are on my pipe, but I do not know where the Ellis or Gllis would come from. There are no other markings on the pipe, no briar or nothing.
The second pipe is a pipe that I believe my father made when he was around 25 years old. There are no markings on there at alll and I do not know if it that is briar. I believe the stem is bone. It is fairly soft. It is 5" long and the bowl is about 3/4" high. Both of the pipes smoke well and I would like to know if the Gllis pipe should be smoked or not. Also, does anyone know where I could find a stem for it? It is a military type and I prefer a full bent stem. I'd be interested in knowing the worth of both pipes as well.
Thank you all for your response, Herman

Thanks Heather.
Nice pipe.
That 2nd pipe looks very similar to antique pipes that I've bought that came from a 100+yo German pipe shop that had closed. Most aren't stamped (apart from some that are stamped with 'Bruyere Garantie') because they were commissioned for the shop. Many of them are French made.
You really do need a rubber bit for that horn stem while it still has a bit & before it looks like it's been gnawed on by a puppy, lol.
A word on horn stems & clenching; being a natural material, horn often has a 'weak point' in the grain that will crack eventually from clenching. I've even heard complaints where they've cracked the first time they were clenched.

"Who Made That Pipe" lists two possible manufacturers for a pipe called "The Ellis'. One is Oppenheimer and the other is L & H Stern. Given the faux hallmarks and the lettering style of the logo, I'm leaning toward L & H Stern. The hexagonal pipe with the horn stem is likely German and probably pre-War. There's something written on the shank, but I can't make it out. Bruyere Guarantee means "Guaranteed", or Real, Briar.

Neither pipe falls into the collectible category so they're of nominal value. Just enjoy smoking them and the memories they evoke.
