These folks dedicate themselves to keeping us safe..I live in a small city. It,s one of the safest in N.Carolina.A fine young man just gave his life to keep it that way.Police and Firemen don't get paid enough or respected enough for the job they do.Right now I feel a burning anger inside over what has happened..When I feel comfortable turning the lights at night and going to bed I remember who's out there putting their life on the line to make me safe..Now that I've said that I will say this..I'm aware that a police officers death is a reminder of how evil this world is...I have guns to protect me and my family.I can get to them really quick and I know how to use them..If someone comes in my house he comes at his own risk....If this offends anyone I'm sorry but I had to get out.

These are the folks who run toward danger, they should get the pay and respect that they should be afforded. All to often we hear about the lone officer that did wrong, but how many times do you hear about the true heroes, who are out there in the night protecting us from those who would do us harm.

I understand how you feel about police and firefighters, usually a thankless job, especially Volunteer Firefighters. The society both you and I live in now is completely different than when we were growing up. Makes me sick every time I hear about a senseless death of a police officer while doing his job to protect and serve. I too know how to use a pistol or rifle pretty darn good to this day. Larry, things are so out of hand that I sleep with a .45 caliber under my pillow and my S&W J frame .357 on a metal bed frame magnet made to hold the pistol in the position I place it. Luckily in the State of NC, you feel threatened by someone breaking your door down to enter your home, you have the legal right to defend yourself if you feel your life is being threatened. In the State of NY the perp must enter your premises before taking the proper action. Let’s hope that neither of us are ever put in this position of making a split second decision. I know how I’d handle the situation immediately without regret, I’ve witnessed enough senseless death in my lifetime, it’s not getting any better out there on the streets today for those protecting us!!

“When seconds count, police are just minutes away”
No knock on cops, they just cannot be everywhere at all times...
I was at a buddy of mine’s house awhile back, as his wife left he asked “Are you prepared?” She replied, “Yes, I have my cell phone”. He told her “Good, that will help locating your body.”
She went into the back room, came out... “Now I am prepared”.

Last night a police officer was killed just outside the police station in Mississippi . Until we swing them from the trees, it won’t stop.

Just read about 2 young Marines EMT, bracing gunfire to treat those hurt in The Las Vegas shoot. They were awarded the Army, Navy Cross.

Methodist minister in Houston just killed an intruder the other night. Intruders get shot at least once a week here. You would think that they would see a pattern. Unfortunately, a 18 month old was also shot in a road rage incident. This is also becoming a weekly thing here. The city of Houston just laid off 265 firemen because of budget cuts. No cops laid off recently, but some "retired" after executing a no knock warrant on the wrong house.

These people are in such a difficult position! I have been very close friends with city police and state police over my life, to the point where I was often the only non-cop in the Texas Hold-em game that traveled from one cops house to another each week. The game always began with everyone taking "all" of their weapons and putting them into a clothes basket to be put in a different part of the house. As I listened to the cops tell their stories about "their day" I felt so bad. They literally put their life on the line every day and they develop an "us vs them" attitude that is unhealthy and, quite frankly, contributes to the hatred some folks have for them.
My closest friend and I often talked about the inner-city aspect of his job and he despised the typical "us vs them" BS that he said was rampant in his department. He said the typical attitude made his job harder because he knew he was walking into a volatile situation where both sides hated each other with a driving passion. Gun play and physical altercation was a nightly occurrence.

Several LEOs in my family, from local to state to federal level. It's absolutely true that these folks develop an "us vs. them" mentality towards the rest of the world, in response to job stress. They sacrifice much more than people realize; they obviously don't earn enough, have lousy schedules etc. But what they primarily sacrifice for us is their ability to live a normal life, ever again, in most cases. That's how it's always seemed to me, anyway.
That said, I'm a gun owner (primarily sporting weapons but do have a self defense handgun as well), I have no problem with guns; but if I lived somewhere where it felt necessary to sleep with one under my pillow or where a person couldn't leave the house without a CCW.. I think I'd move. 😁

I'm sure most of you feel the same way.

We have had a bunch of Houston cops with DWIs lately. I believe that the job stress combined with not wanting to appear weak by seeing a counselor leads to self medication. I don't have any ideas for how to help them. The general population of the country doesn't seem to have any moral code these days. I have two friends with the sheriff's department who have held up well, with help from the church, MC, and a lot of community support. A lot of friends who live in small Texas towns have more trouble than we have in Humble because of the meth labs and migrant gangs. Of course in the small Texas towns with no trouble people sleep with a gun next to the bed because, you know, Texas.

I rarely CC in my area, unless I am out at night or going to a known trouble area, which I mostly avoid. It is nice to have. Truck gun is a permanent accessory.

I live in a town that is annually rated as one of the safest places in the nation...we have a lot of gun owners, not unusual to see someone open carry, I assume everyone is carrying.
It makes for a polite society.
I know people that live in places where it is very hard to get a ccw, and open carry is forbidden... crime is rampant, and it is easy to get “dogged” by losers and gang members, that environment emboldens scumbags.

If we remove two American cities from the crime statistics we would be the safest country in the world. One of them is a no carry city.

I have been to Oakland and I was scared the whole time. Everyone I met had those "swirly eyes". I heard that the Detroit police chief wants every law abiding citizen to carry.

Remember, you are the true first responder.
The vast majority of cops, firefighters, and EMTs will help - as soon as they get there. As has been said, they can't be everywhere at once, nor would we want to live in such a police state or pay for that kind of coverage.
Own, maintain, and know how to use your emergency gear.

I couldn't live under that government, or even a queen that I respect very much. I would get myself ejected in no time.

Would love to move to Ireland, but can't carry my Dr. with me and his family might object. Other than that I would possibly consider it....can't leave my Dr....he is the only thing keeping me alive.

Doctors are another profession full of heroes. I have had long conversations with my doctor about the issues they face these days. I have very good doctors and I wouldn't like to trade my Medicare for the NHS. I get the same or better treatment as I did with private insurance and the co-pays are less.

For the most part I have excellent doctors here, only one I fired about 4 years ago. Was all about money with this group, not the quality of patient care. All of specialists I see now I’d highly recommend. The hospital care in NC is second to none, the staff is trained to give proper care and compassion to the patient as well as family members.
I have a doctor friend back on Long Island, he’s a Neurologist, he also treats patients one day a week as a primary care Internist, which he’s also board certified, free of any cost if they are on a low fixed income. Wonder how many doctors would do the same today??
