I used to walk 3 miles a day. Then a couple of years ago I had a hip replaced.I let my mental fear cause me to stop walking..I'm still much over weight at 5 ft 4 inches tall at 233 pounds even though I'm 80 pounds less than I once was..I saw the doc yesterday she said every thing is fine except my weight. She gave me the official OK to start walking again..Tomorrow I hit the road again. My goal is to loose 80 more pounds in the next 2 years..Along with the walking I have tighten up on what I eat..She Says..If it tastes good don't eat it..Easier said than done, but I have to do what I have to do.

You can do it Larry! The lifestyle change might suck at first, but you'll be happier, and healthier later.

Larry you’ve got this. One thing I did, and lost 20lbs. Was portion control. I didn’t deny myself anything, but instead of 3 scoops of ice cream every night, I had one scoop 3-4 times a week. I discovered if I went cold turkey on something, I got po’d about it, and if I got stressed or had a rough day, I would binge eat comfort foods. This way they were still in my diet and I wasn’t missing them. I learned you can actually put potato chips in a bowl and not take the whole bag to the couch! LOL

You can do it, Larry! I've reduced my diet to salads, meat, and vegetables. I've lost about 20lbs in 8 weeks. I'm not want for decent food. Remember, diet is 90% of weigh loss. Exercise helps keep you at a calorie deficit. Also, lots of salt will keep the water weight on, so try to reduce that a bit too. I eat just lunch, dinner, and night snack.

Good luck Larry, you can do it. Take your daily walks, start off with a short distance for a few days. Slowly add more as you start to feel better and more relaxed. As far as losing weight, eat what you enjoy in limited amounts. The trick is......no donuts, cookies, cakes...drop any foods made with flour. Eat more fruits and vegetables. By you dropping those carbs from flour, which your body turns into sugar and your not burning off enough calories right now will make a huge difference. After a month of a strict “ no/low carb “ diet you’ll notice that the weight is coming off, you will lose at least 12 pounds the first month. After you see your on the way to reaching your goal, have a cheat day once a week, then go for a longer walk. I know someone that lost over 105 lbs within the first year, basically by dropping flour from her diet completely but had a cheat day once a week. Worse thing you can do is weigh yourself every day, start with a two week weigh in and continue every two weeks.
You will achieve your goal. Go slow at first, keep a positive attitude, the rest will come natural 👍👍👍

Diets suck, but yeah they're necessary. BUT, they're as much habit pattern as anything, so once you get used to eating healthy, it actually DOESN'T suck anymore. You'll get there! Enjoy the walks. I've had a lifetime habit of nighttime walks, usually with a dog or two. It's always been about more than fitness for me, and I suspect that's true of everyone who enjoys walking. So welcome back .

I have to chime in...exercise is good for muscles, respiratory, etc...
But diet plays the most important role in getting the weight down.

We're behind you on this, Larry. Diets suck. I'd go with the advice above on portion size. Eat the stuff you like but less of it (if you can).
I've also heard that not eating after 6pm helps with the weight loss too.
And regardless, I'm sure you'll feel better for getting out and walking too.

Larry, I feel your pains, in 2012 I started cycling again and from then until late 2017 I was doing about 6000 miles a year. Spring 2017 I had medial meniscus surgery on my left knee, that took some miles out of my plan, then my lower back went haywire on me. Missed out of most of last year’s cycling, maybe 500 miles. This year, to compound things, my back is still a major issue, my right knee started giving me issues and now my right shoulder. I have been on my bike twice this year. I don’t mention these things for sympathy but understanding of your plight and concerns. I am determined to get myself back into a position where I can start cycling again, since 2017, I am up about 30lbs from where I got down to in 2012 after gastric bypass surgery and am feeling every ounce of it. You got this, your doctor has given you the all clear to start getting even modest exercise happening. Start slow, build on it. Like I said, you got this! ExChef

I have been trying to walk more as well, and I do enjoy smoking a pipe while I am walking. There is a sport dedicated to pipe smoking while walking, and it is called "Lunting". Enjoying a pipe while smoking can both enhance enjoyment of the outdoors as well as help remove some of the monotony of putting one foot in front of the other. www.lunting.org/Ill be joining, and they also help find similar groups in your area.

Good luck with your new regimen. I've lost 25 lb in the past year. I eat more fruit and vegetables and keep carbs to a minimum. Walking is a great start. You can still have the occasional treat but just keep it at every once in a while. You'll be surprised at how quickly the pounds come off. One word of caution, you'll be looking for new pants and shirts so the money you save on treats will go toward your new wardrobe. Not a bad trade.
