Made some new tampers and stained my new Bully cob, thanks to Josh for the wonderful gift! Bottom tamper made out of cedar twig found in the yard...I use it daily.

I just received a MM cob from Tim West today and since I already have a few I wondered about tricking it up a bit. Your post pepesdad1 clinched it for me. I will post the pics when she's done!

Good...that is the point of doing things like this...get the ideas flowing...I originally got he idea from piffy, who has disappeared for a while...he is an expert at reconditioning estate pipes...so credit goes to him.

I am happy they are being used, I try to make them individually different from natural stuff that I find on my property...gives an old man something to do besides hollering at kids to get off his lawn.

The rim had a couple tiny chips so I beveled it a bit from original and I stained the bowl.
This pipe is different from any MM I have seen in that the label is different, the tenon is metal, and the combo of size, brass ring, and saddle bit don't match anything I've seen from them.
Fun stuff!

Very nice!! Put a glaze on that bad baby and it will shine for ya. Should I have any concern about a glaze preventing the pipes ability to breathe?

I've got glaze on every cob I own (about 10) and they all smoke wonderfully just the same as before I stained them and glazed them. So have at it. Some will tell you that it stops the pipe from breathing...BS...the only time it will slow the breathing is when I've passed out/on.

The cob and tampers look great. What do you use to secure the tamps in the wood?

Are you sanding the cob before the stain? What kind of glaze?
I bought 2 Bully's in anticipation of staining one. Thanks for posting this and any detail on how you did it would be appreciated by this newbie.

Blackmouth210: I use super glue gel to set the metal into the drilled hole and then super glue liquid to surround the metal in the hole...kinda making it a seal. Briarbuck: Yes, I sand the whole cob and shank lightly to get the waxiness off them..then Fiebings leather dye (whatever color you choose I like Ken's green as much as I like the saddle tan that I usually use. The glaze is Duraclear High Gloss Varnish...and it doesn't seem to affect the breathing of the pipe. All supplies I got at Hobby Lobby.
Have fun and be sure to use gloves when staining or you will be wearing it...actually sandpaper on your fingers will take it off!
