I bought an estate Castello over the winter. It arrived in great shape. It was cleaned very very well. I’ve smoked it plenty since I’ve had it, and it seems that every time I smoke it, I get a pretty heavy taste of Lakeland essence out of it.
What can I do to eliminate the taste?

You will find a lot of descriptions of using 191 proof alcohol and rock salt. I have found that the ghost flavor hides mainly in the shank. Clean it thoroughly with alcohol and bristle pipe cleaners until they come out clean. I use 151 rum to clean and sweeten my pipes at the same time. Lakeland is rough because it can even get into the acrylic stem. A retort treatment can make a big difference if everything else fails.

If you are brave enough you can try smoking through it! Check with some professional restoration guys on what they charge to remove a Lakeland essence. Beyond that you could make that a dedicated Lakeland pipe. I have two pipes that only smoke Lakeland blends.
I don't care for Lakeland but I'll smoke it when I get brave or facing massive amounts of peer pressure!

Charlie's got it right. Ozone treatment is the best solution. Walker Pipe Repair handles it.

So you gents have sent pipes for this ozone treatment?
I find the statement that the ozone treatment "sanitizes 50 times greater than bleach" quite a claim.

All I know is that it has worked flawless on the pipes I sent him, at $5, not much of a risk.

I had a pipe that had an extremely stubborn smell to it. I've never tried Lakeland so I don't know how to describe it other than to say it was reminiscent of the smell you used to get when walking into a hotel room that had been changed over from a smoking room to a non-smoking room.
I found that 80% of the smell was something captured in the shank and/or mortis.
I removed the remaining 20% using ozone.

I’ve found that nothing really removes the ghost. It fades but never goes away.

The salt and Everclear treatment has worked for me on heavily ghosted pipes. Sometimes you need to do it twice.

You could dedicate it to lakelands. Time to crack a tin of Ennerdale and smoke that ghost into submission.

Folks everywhere, even in this thread, joke about the dreaded Lakeland ghost, but I don't notice it hardly. It doesn't bother me to smoke a Lakeland in one of my regular Virginia pipes. It might be noticeable in the first bowl after, but not really in the second. What makes me crazy is the ghost of Captain Black. I've gotten pipes from Europe with the Captain firmly ensconced! That's just nuts. There have got to be expats or crazies importing Captain Black from America, just to mess up my day buying used pipes on eBay. My solutions to the ghost of the Captain are threefold: - For mildly ghosted pipes, salt and alcohol treatment. It's kind of a nice general cleaner anyway, and for a very mild ghost, salt and alcohol will erase it.
- For moderately ghosted pipes, the pipe retort. Steve Laug has written about this.. Every treatment with the pipe retort is like five or eight salt go-rounds.
- For the pipe truly, deeply haunted by the Captain, I just smoke the everliving hell out of it with St Bruno. (Chase one ghost with another, right?)
I realize I am not as discerning as some. The ghost of the Captain just bothers me more than others.

I lost this thread for a while. I couldn't find it. Wanted to thank everyone for the info! Sounds easy enough to send it to Walker Pipe Repair. Can't beat $5! Thanks again gents! I will report back once I get the pipe back.
