The thread about two of the same pipe brought back old memories..Almost 25 years ago I bought my first high grade pipe.Almost 250 dollars a lot of money for a pipe back then.It was made in England.A beautiful pipe perfectly balanced.I was really thrilled to have it..Not for long..It smoked so hot that I honestly couldn't hold it.I tried and tried. It just wouldn't break in..A friend got me in touch with the owner of the company.he had me send the to him in England..I later got an email from him with pictures of 4 pipes telling me to select one as a replacement..I emailed him back and told him to make another pipe exactly like the pipe I sent him..Now it gets a bit weird..He emailed me again an said..Even though we couldn't find anything wrong with your pipe we can't make another one like it.Please select one of the four pictured pipes as a replacement..I selected one. they sent it and it smokes great..If this story leaves you a bit confused join the party..One last note ..Getting this pipe replaced took about 4 frustrating months and quite a few emails some of then not answered, and I still didn't get the pipe I sent him duplicated.

Over 30 years ago I was in the cities biggest pipe specialist store, Sol Levy, just to check out the pipes. We got talking & I said that I'd smoked pipes in my youth but gave them up for cigarettes mainly for convenience but also due to tongue bite.
Mr Levy then gave a long explanation that ended in him saying that a 'decent' pipe with a 'special design that cures tongue bite' would cure all tongue bite issue. The lying fat...... grrrr ()
Like an idiot I believed him & bought an expensive Sherlock Holmes Peterson with P-lip. Unfortunately I also chose a cherry tobacco that burned my tongue.
As it turned out, around 9 years ago I took it out of storage & haven't looked back. It's an excellent smoker & stood up to being smoked daily for around 7 years as I had no clue that a briar needed to be rested.
Still, had I actually known the truth, I would have bought a few MM cobs, a couple of Falcons & a heap of non-aromatic tobacco for that money. ($350aud)

Very confused here. So did they keep the original pipe? Yes..They kept the original pipe..They never explained why the pipe smoked so hot or why they they couldn't duplicate it..They just insisted that I take a replacement.

Who was the manufacturer of the pipe? Sounds like they were pretty helpful even having the owner works with you directly.

The pipe was an.. Upshall..I didn't mean this post in a negative way on that brand..I feel that it's possible to get a not so good pipe in most any brand..The replacement pipe smokes very well..My disappoint in this was that I really liked the pipe I sent them except for it smoking so hot and they wouldn't send me another one like it and wouldn't explain to me why they wouldn't.

If they believed nothing was wrong with the pipe then you would have found a duplicate to smoke hot as well I imagine, but who knows

I believe Upshall closed its doors recently, but was known to be a very good pipe in its day.
