Wasn’t sure how to title this and I apologize if this has been addressed here before. I am not picking on anyone. But bonanzadrivers recent thread “7 boxes” got me thinking about this again. Do our family’s, Loved ones, Friends, know what we have here? If they are not involved in the hobby, they have no clue. To be realistic a lot of people here have way more tobacco than they were ever smoke in their life. When that day comes, and it will. What will your family do with all of this stuff? “Ooo grandpas nasty old pipes and tobacco!” Throw it in the trash. Give the pipes to Goodwill. That old tobacco sign is cool, I’ll put it in my garage, toss the rest.
Between pipes, tobacco and memorabilia, knickknacks etc. Some her have a small fortune worth of stuff. And those that have those infamous pipes made by the danish. does someone know it could be worth? thousands?
I know some do hold tobacco as an investment. But what if you don’t sell it before that day?
Many here are fortunate to have good friends here who are in the hobby and will make sure that the family is taken care of.
I have told my family that if anything happens to me. (I don’t have any smoking buddies, except all of you) There is a list of names of people on the Briar Patch in my pipe cabinet that she should contact and ask for advise and/or assistance. These people don’t know who they are and I won’t say names. But I feel they could be trusted not to take advantage of her and would help assist her with this. Hey, I believe we have good folks here! My son has no interest.
Has anyone else thought about this? What are your thoughts? Ideas?

All my tobacco, pipes , cigars and humidors go to my friend Brad. Vice versa. We both have told our wives already. The only exception is if my son chooses to smoke which I’m not sure if I want or not. He’s 11. If Brad goes before me, I don’t know what I would do with all of it.

Well, I gave this some thought several years ago...while I am not what I call well off, in fact mice that come here bring their own cheese...so I made a point of giving my Comoys to a good friend who appreciates not only the pipes but the thought behind it and since then I have "adopted" Josh and have given him several of my best smokers...why the best. you might inquire, because if I give my best then the recipient knows that I really care about them and since I enjoy the lowly cob...they are sufficient unto me as far as my smoking is concerned...as far as tobacco is concerned, I look at it in the same way...something happens to me, my wife and lil doggie, then the tobacco will be where I would want it to be.
So, this has been my answer to that question...what to do with all this old man's crap?

It may be a little early to plan my permanent retirement.
I imagine all my possessions from the barn and sheds will be heaped upon the house in which I lay. I will hoisted onto the very top. Then the whole thing is set ablaze... that is not asking too much, is it?

I was just talking to Walt about this today. My middle son who is 9 is always interested to see any pipes that I have acquired since his last visit, he likes looking at them. He also likes the smell of my countless tobaccos. Hes only 9 years old, but incredibly smart. He wants to be a dr. and so far hes on the right track. Advanced placement classes and straight A's. I hope it stays that way. I'm sure that most of my stash will end up going to him. My Virginia's will be excellent by then He told me that doctors and scientists should smoke pipes because pipes make you think. He gets the idea Hes also researched the difference in pipes vs. Cigars vs. Cigarettes. In any case, I have a notebook that I keep hidden with my inventory of pipes and what they cost me new. Some have sentimental value and they will either be passed on to one of my kids, or be handed off to any pipe smoking friends that I meet.

My wife knows what I've got, and bought a lot of it herself. She has her own pipes and cellar herself. My collection will likely be landfill upon my passing.

In my WILL my daughter was left full instructions what to do with ALL my briars and Meerschaum Pipes. Also all of my tinned tobacco’s.
I left her Steve Fallon’s aka Pipestuds phone number and email address. He will treat her fairly with the purchase and sale of my Estate pipes and tobacco’s......JMHO

I told the wifey about a few choice friends having pick of the litter. The rest can go to eBay and let the free market decide.

I already have my forum options set up to notify me when a fellow pipe smoker hasn’t posted in a week.
Some may say it is vulturistic.

My son and son-in-law both smoke an occasional pipe. They also both know about my spreadsheet that chronicles all my pipe smoking purchases and tracks my cellar. My wife is a successful eBay merchant, so amongst all of them, they will figure it out. At least two things are true. At that point, I won’t care one iota as to the disposition of the accumulation, and I won’t have to listen to my wife’s exclamations when she discovers the totality of my expenditures.

I've filled in one of my kids on the pipe and book collections and gave them a little rundown on how things work but I can see them sitting around the house for many years after I've gone to the My Mixture Jar on the shelf. After all the pipe shows and smoke filled rooms my I don't think mrslax believes I have 30 pipes that cost $15/20 bucks anymore.

My wife knows that my stuff has value, but she's going to be really pleasantly surprised. Not even going to think about being here without her.

I don't care much because I'll be dead, and money isn't that important in my world. I *think* I've told my kids to keep 'em or put 'em on eBay. Same with my stamp collection, my autograph collection and my books. Oh, and the guitars and Beatles memorabilia and Disney memorabilia as well. It's only stuff... and I think they're intelligent enough to know what to do... the market will take care of the sale of the ranch and the house on the golf course.

My "collection" is small, but I have all 3 of my sons and my son-in-law smoking pipes now, so it will be in good hands. The kids are already wrangling in a good-natured, family way over who gets my saddles and guns when I kick, so this will just add to the party.

A failure to be honest with your spouse about hobby expenditures can really lead to "the steal of the century" for someone else....be it in guns, Ham radio equipment, artisan pipes, etc....

All mine goes to my little brother. I have been meaning to write some advice down for him on general values and possible ways of unloading it if he doesn't want it for himself.

My wife won't know what to do with it all. I must give her some advice.
Thanks for the reminder.
