This beautiful, once smoked(!) post-transition Barling Straight Grain Presentation Bulldog arrived several days ago. I'm not counting this pipe as a Chicago Show purchase even though I first saw it there. Since it is both post-transition and my first Barling, I first did some research into it. After doing some Googling plus exchanging e-mails with Barling guru sablebrush52, I learned that Presentation was the high end post-transition Barling line. While other lines were made in the Cadogan factory, the Presentation line was hand made in the Charatan factory. Based on dates that I saw, this would be the Lane-era Charatan factory. After doing my homework, I reached out to the seller, made a deal, and bought the pipe. I knew from seeing it, that it had been barely smoked. After receiving it and cleaning it, I realized that this pipe had only been smoked once.

Nice! Jesse was my go to guy to find out the history on my post transition, not as nice as yours by any stretch, but it gets regularly smoked.

I LOVE these old pipes. I have one pre-trans Barling with about the same amount out logo still on the stem. I fact, I think I need to throw some LBF in it and take it for a walk.

I've enjoyed mine these past 40 + years as I'm sure you will yours ! The only pipes that Barling made that were even partially oil cured were the Guinea Grain range, and the purpose of that oil was to increase the contrast of the grain. All other Barlings were air cured. Barling's literature went so far as to state that they avoided all such methods of speeding the curing process because they considered such methods artificial and inferior to air curing. Algerian briar, yes, through 1954. Oil cured, no.
