 Paul does pipe rescue that is awesome, saw a pipe that had a broken piece reconstructed on another forum, the results were fantastic. Paul shoot me a PM.

How long was the original stem?

Hey John, I'm not sure about the original stem length, maybe about 3 inches? But what I had to work was about what you see on the pipe, about an inch. I probably lost a 32nd of an inch in forming the button from the broken end of the the stem.
