yanceyfamilygenealogy.org/tobacco.htmStumbled across this today as I read in search of information on tobacco fermentation. Could you imagine being one of the rough men hired to roll a 1000lb barrel of tobacco to a warehouse? Haha, someone tell the US government we can solve the "obesity epidemic" with tobacco!

Thanks for posting, interesting for sure. Extremely hard stressful job, can you imagine waking up every morning knowing what your job of the day will consist of, backbreaking work!!

Great read, amazing what "work" used to mean
It's funny, I always envisioned pipe smokers from back in those days as smoking the leaves they grew in their garden but I'm guessing that they probably smoked some good shite too!

Outstanding article...a great read if you are interested in the history. The history really gets my blood going! Especially when it comes to Virginia tobacco, I am thinking about growing some Red Virginia. I want to read everything I can find on the old ways of curing, fermentation, and production of the leaf! Here is an old video showing NC flue cured from the field to auction.

Remember until after the end of the Civil War those men that were "hired" were slaves.
