I am debating buying this pipe and I know it's valuable but I don't know how far to go on price. I have seen these well used "listed" on Ebay for $600 but listing it doesn't represent the value and I can't find any info that would help me know how much to pay for it. It is in perfect condition and never smoked.
Does anyone have a clue?

You make a good point Ted! I've wanted to get a calabash and although I think an unsmoked Kaywoodie from the 1930's or 40's probably has some nice value, I don't need a collectors item just to smoke If I thought I could get it for $100 and turn it around for $300 that would be a different story

That is a fine specimen of a true gourd calabash. I have one from when I bought it back in the 60's..I use it occasionally...occasionally because you really need to pay attention to what you are doing...it is a bit awkward to handle and smoke, but it is also a lot of fun...gives you a cool dry smoke for sure...make sure you occasionally clean the tar out of the bottom of the gourd...and yes over time it will color to a deep mahogany sheen. Matter of fact, I'm gonna smoke it now since it has been mentioned.

Who ever won that bid will be in smoking heaven 👍 Yeah, I felt like I could easily have turned it around and sold it for $300 - $400 given the collectability and having never been smoked but I just didn't need to spend $130 to try my first calabash

It would be a good deal at $200. I have one I just put a new bowl on and can't decide whether to smoke it or sell it. just the bowl was $80 on sale. 600 is way too much unless it's got gold or something.

Ebay has a Pioneer for $115 and an Austrian made for $135. Both of these will be excellent smokers. In a gourd calabash there isn't much that can set Kaywoodie apart. I would go for the Pioneer, maybe. But then I really like Austrian pipes.

I saw this exact pipe that sold for $340 and it had been lightly smoked. I guess it is somewhat rare as Kaywoodie only made a limited number of them for a limited time.
I think the reason it went so cheap is that it was on shopgoodwill and not many people know about them plus they do a poor job of listing. I just happened to see the Kaywoodie logo and knew it was special.

I really like the way a true calabash smokes. Very cool and dry with an enhanced flavor. Gourds require more care than a briar, but it's worth it. You have to let it dry out completely between smokes. I de-funk the gourd with the occasional swift rinse and wipe with Everclear. Enjoy!

Kaywoodie is special when it comes to their high quality briars. I think it is just the rarity in this case. Pioneer has a long, good reputation for calabash pipes. If you want a collectors item to not smoke, make an offer.

Kaywoodie Calabashes are moderately collectible. I've never seen one sell for anything close to $600. That's the market range for a fine British made calabash from the early 20th century. Used in good shape the Kaywoodie calabashes generally sell form around $150 plus or minus. AN unsmoked one could go for close to $300 if it was also mint.

But have you noticed that some pipes are getting stupid money on eBay lately. But no way 600,or even 350 for me.

That's a beautiful pipe. I understand these are real collectibles. You can, however, get a new African Gourd Calabash with Turkish block Meerschaum bowl at CPW Calabash Pipes, www.calabashpipesworld.com/shop/. Run from 3-400.

Yeah, Ive heard nothing but good things about www.calabashpipesworld.com/ . I love a vintage Kaywoodie, but $600 for their calabash is just too steep.

Being a a KW, I wonder if it had a stinger? I received the pipe Tuesday and when trying to remove the stem it would not budge!
I placed it in the freezer yesterday for 1 1/2 hours to loosen and happy to report it has a four hole stinger.
Now I can't decide if I should smoke it or sell it.

I would love one in my collection... I need to start a new thread to know what I'm looking for in a proper gourd calabash pipe.

First thing people say to me on seeing my collection- without fail "You need one of those big Sherlock Holmes pipes" I'd be afraid to break one of these. I picture the gourd as being brittle and also, I'm a clincher... I guess it would look very attractive on the self though. Better luck on your next bid, stone
