I don't post much here but I do stop by every day trying to increase my knowledge and get some inspiration. I see threads about fancy tampers and the occasional mention of doctor's knives and such. I've seen the Sheffield style knives but they're rather expensive and I'm very cheap and always think I can do more with less. So I decided to try to create my own 'pipe knife'. I started with a cheap Rough Rider folding knife I got on ebay for less that $10. This model is called the Tiny Stockman. It has three blades and is only 2" long when closed. I have recently discovered angled tampers (I've only been at this pipe smoking thing for a little over a year) and wanted to have this one have an angled tip so I used an old hinge pin from my Chevy S10 and cut it to size with a hacksaw and used my bench grinder, file, and sandpaper to shape it. I then cut a channel down half the length with the hacksaw and kept grinding on the knife blade until it would fit in the cut I had made. I epoxied the new tamper onto the knife blade. I also rounded the tip of the small blade and dulled it's edge so that I could use it as a dottle pick/scraper and not damage my pipes. The third blade was left as it came and is handy to have to cut little things like packing tape and loose threads, etc. All in all I think it came out rather nice. It's small, useful, and easy to carry. The tamper end still folds most of the way shut so so it doesn't take up too much room in your pocket.

Nice travel tool! I'm all about the angled tamper, too.
