I have a straight grain BBB that I picked up very cheap, it has been a great smoker..... smoked a bowl tonight and it started what i guess to be burnout near the rim....bummer. I got it cheaper than a MM cob so it isn't like I am out a lot of money. Then: Now: Although this last pic, you see a blackened rim...it is soot buildup, I always use a soft flame.

That’s odd, maybe a prior cover up repair?? That pipe had a nice grain.

That’s odd, maybe a prior cover up repair?? That pipe had a nice grain. Guessing that the briar had a soft spot...cleaned the carbon, and there is a slight crack at the rim...when you think about splitting wood, it makes sense that the end of a straight grain might be compromised under stress. It was an old estate that I think had not been smoked in many moons prior to me getting it. 3/4 bowls from here on out.

That sucks, but like has been said above me... If it still smokes well, keep 'er lit.

Maybe layering pipe mud in that location will be something that will work...I've got a beautiful GBD Virgin straight grained that developed a crack from top to bottom along one of the "lines" in the pipe...doesn't affect my smoking, just pisses me off that it happened...still smoke it every other day..it hasn't gotten any worse, just makes it unsaleable...not that I would.

Odd place for a burnout. Seems more like it might have been a fill in an earlier repair that came out. Anyway, location is not one to affect it's smoking. Years left in that baby.

Use a wind cap on it, to doll it up and hide the damage.

I am just going to smoke it as is... I will just leave the tobacco lower. If it was an expensive pipe, I would really be bummed.

That’s a bummer for sure. Some pipe mud or like you said, just pack under the bad spot.

Well, hell.
That truly sucks to lose such a pretty pipe. I say smoke it until the axels are in the ground!

If you put fire to wood, I guess you cannot complain if the wood occasionally burns...first world problem. We can get so spoiled as to the resilience of briar, that we can sometimes lose sight of it's occasional fault.
