Awhile back, I received my Peterson book at work, and opened the package and was talking to my colleagues about Peterson pipes and the history. My supervisor in dispatch was on the other side of the window was listening in, that I was unaware of. Chris, that supervisor is a quiet guy, and after a couple weeks off he told me..paraphrased: I asked Chris about the family living in Latvia when so much of the Peterson history was in Ireland...he said that when the Communists took over Latvia in 1945? the family moved out...his girlfriends father only moved back when the Russkies left. (I am guessing that the timeline fits in wit Konrad...Charles never left Ireland) Chris told me that is girl friends father as cousins that has pipes made by Charles Peterson, and that recently they went to the Peterson factory (Not Chris), and got the red carpet treatment. A sidenote to the Peterson Family. comeheretome.com/2016/09/22/konrad-peterson-1888-1981-latvian-revolutionary-and-pioneering-civil-engineer/

Great story Charlie, thanks for sharing with us👌👍👍. When it comes to reading old history about pipes I’d finish the book almost immediately without putting it down, while enjoying a few pipes!!!

Where is my Charles Peterson Latvian Pipe that you are going to hunt down for me?
Small world indeed. That coincidence sounds far fetched for a fictional book. Unreal.

It would only be proper for the pipe to end up with another Charles! From the linked article: Mark Irwin, the author of the recently released Peterson book, spoke of her in a blog post. www.petersonpipenotes.org/aboutI have still barely looked through the book, but I will have her name on my radar.

That article is super cool. I'm a little surprised this didn't get a side-note in the recently-published English-language "Peterson bible"

I'm a little surprised this didn't get a side-note in the recently-published English-language "Peterson bible" Just a guess on my part, but he probably wanted to confine the subject matter to just pipe related information... Konrad lived with him, but I am guessing that he was never involved with the business. A point of clarification, Chris’s visit with his girlfriend’s father....Chris is 30 something, so I imagine his girlfriend is about the same age. Her father lived his whole life here and moved to Latvia after they achieved independence from the USSR. And, Chris told me that Charles Peterson pipe I referenced earlier was a Peterson pipe in the family, but he wasn’t sure if it was made by Charles. Sorry for the confusion in that regard.

I remember reading/hearing somewhere that neither Kapp nor Peterson were Irish natives.
The Kapps were Germans and the Petersons were from Latvia. Ireland is more international than you think!

I could be wrong, but as far as I know, the "girlfriend's father" looks like is Andris Neibergs living in Riga now. He is the only one from large Peterson's family. who moved back from USA to Latvia after the independence was renewed there. Pipe in Latvia is made by Jonh Peterson, Charles brother, who lived and worked in K&P till 1912. Than he passed and his grave is in the Mount Jerome Cemetery in Dublin.

In different blogs and web pages we can read that Charles Peterson was born in Riga. That is a mistake. Charles Peterson wasn't born in Riga. I have to say, that he even never lived in Riga, just couple times later he visited the capital of Latvia. Charles (his real name was Kristaps) was born in Zalenieki village and it is about 70 km away from Riga to South side, to the direction of border with Lithuania. The nearest town was Mithaw (nowadays the town is called Jelgava). In Zalenieki C.Peterson spent his childhood, attend local parish school and 15 years old he was sent to Mithaw learn the crafts. After five years he become a wood-turner. In the same year (September, 1872) Charles packed his suitcase and went to St.Petersburg, stayed there for couple month and traveled to Germany. This is the very short version of story how Charles/Kristaps left Latvia.

My supervisor had said something about what I thought was Kristof... Kristap sounds pretty close.

Is it common to see pipe smokers in Latvia, Sandra?
And are you all subject to EU type laws on tobacco resulting in it being highly taxed and regulated?

No, pipes in Latvia were popular at the Peterson's time, but not now. Being the EU country we have some regulations concerning taxes but tobacco prices in Latvia is still about three times cheaper than in Ireland for instance.

That is quite a differential in price considering both countries are in the EU... happy for you, sad for our Irish friend Legend Lover.... Can you share any information on the progress of the book that is in Latvian about the Peterson family possibly being translated into English? I would certainly buy one.

Thanks for the sentiment, Charlie. Judging by the 'location' section of Sandra's bio, she appears to be in Ireland too. Since I'm in Northern Ireland and subject to the UK tax laws etc. I think in this case I am the one who is better-off.
