Seems I am surrounded by sadness lately. My first cousin who is dieing of throat cancer and a cigar guy called me this morning, wanted to know if I could sit with him for a couple hrs while his wife does shopping. I readily agreed, it’s gonna be a sad morning for me, for those in the Patch who pray, say a few prayers for him and me, hope I don’t break down.  |

I'm with you Brad...prayers for you and him. Martin knows...we are at an age where our friends are going one after the other...it is sad, but life moves on without us and we can only try to make it better for the younger folks.

I'm sorry for this event. Just try and enjoy the time and hopefully be able to share happy memories with some laughs thrown in as well. Easier said than done though.  |

I’m back, he was in very good spirits, oxygen hooked up, sitting in recliner. They didn’t know a lady friend was gonna show up to help her clean house up, they apologized and said my trip was for naught, told them I wanted very much to visit with him. He was in high spirits, we traded oil field stories, I told him about his side of the family, living with my Grandparents I knew stories he didn’t know, about 1:30 he dimmed on me, I told him to go to bed, I helped him lay down, Lady was still there so I left. I made him laugh, felt good about that.

Good friends are hard to come by, especially those you’ve had in your life for 30 plus years!!! I will pray for your cousin Brad, and that the family can find some measure of peace. Quite often in times like this, people deal with grief by avoiding the unpleasantness of the prognosis foretelling such dire circumstances and they stay away afraid that they will break down and make the situation worse.
It means a lot to the dying that the family shows up and spends time expressing their support for the person at their darkest hour. Even when there is a strained relationship from the past, there comes a time that it bodes well when forgiveness is expressed regardless of how the person responds.
Having spent time with my sister at the end of her days, and seeing that transaction take place between her and my cousin, that had an extremely strained relationship brought peace to them both in a remarkable way.

Glad you were able to spend "quality" time with your cousin. Good news he was feeling cheerful and alert. This comes to us all and is time well spent with others. You are a good man, Brad. You are present for those who need you.

Its good you got to be there for a friend/ family, good ones are hard to come by and should be honored. You did that, and as tough as it was, it was a good thing. My positive thoughts are with you!
