I’ve been a customer of DTV for 25 yrs. Son a Surgery Tech came home to stay with the old folks, helping him hookup his flat screen tv in his room, we hooked it to a basic receiver in the second bedroom. No signal thru the HDMI cable, told him, go get my DVR Box in the pipe room, it’s newer. Hooking it up Viola, signal. Good to go. Now the sad part AT&T has gobbled up DTV, I am routed to a person that will help me, the only problem, a Cajun talking to an Indian who doesn’t scalp you maybe has humor in it, but I couldn’t understand the young lady, in her defense, it’s another language and she’s just doing her job. After telling her about the broke receiver , and wanting to upgrade, she says 200$, WHAT I SAID, NO WAY, we go thru a password dance, and then she asks security question, what’s my favorite Actor, I tell her JOHN WAYNE, How do you spell it she said, WHAT, YOU DONT KNOW HOW TO SPELL John Wayne, give me your Supervisor, I wait, I’ve been on the phone over an hour and a half. Finally I get a Man who is also hard to understand. I finally get a basic receiver, in exchange, I fell him my receiver is 11 yrs old, they really got there moneIES worth out of that equipment and me, it flew over his head. I’m waiting for the eqipment. AT&T F^~K YOU. PS yes I tried 4 different HDMI Cables and no signal.

Just one of the reasons I got rid of all that crap...wife watches her movies on netflix, hulu, yada yada..I get my news from internet...three TVs and only one is being used...been over 15 years since we got rid of the $100.00 per month with crap for programming...haven't missed a thing except having an extra $100.00 per month to spend on groceries or whatever I/we want.

I've nothing against the call centre workers in other countries. Like you say, they are doing their jobs...
However, the language barrier (or should I say, communication barrier) is a pain, to the point where I would pay extra to have a service supported by UK call centres.
In fact, that's often a selling point over here. Places advertise as having UK call centres.

I have gotten better communicating with people in India and the Philippines who handle my problems. For the most part, they want to help. It takes a minute or so to re-tune my ear but I get there. That is the way of things now. No longer do we get to talk with someone like Ernestine the Telephone Operator.

My sister went through hell disconnecting my mother's ATT DirectTV after she (my mother) passed away. They wanted death certificates and proof of power of attorney. Just to disconnect from them. I'll never use them. Note: no language problem. Just dba problem.

It took me 5 phone calls and 2 online help chats to get my service disconnected. I heard horror stories about people being billed for service they thought was disconnected. So, I called almost everyday for a week, and then moved in to chat. Every time I called in they had no idea my service was supposed to be cancelled.

Att is a huge pain. I've been paying for 2 additional lines that I asked to have cancelled over a year ago. As soon as my contract is up with them, it's not getting renewed.
DirecTV is a whole different hassle. One that I dont have to deal with any longer.

It is mine as well, though I do use some of those services. What ever happened to the old days when a land line to your home was $20 a month and TV was free? Oh well, it was a lousy picture anyway.

It's really sad how big companies have outsourced their call centers. I know the company that I work for over the past 30 years has outsourced a lot of departments. That word "outsource" is a cuss work around my job.

OC, Can't blame ya at all sir, in fact I feel your pain not only with trying to communicate with someone that hasn't a clue about the English language but, is denser then dried cow manure. Not to mention AT&T use to be good when they were still with Ma Bell but, now on there own and with this wireless internet there real POS's. I've got Dish and they aint so bad but, would love to go back to cable if they had it out here but, alas. Internet and phone I have Hughes which again is wireless, not too bad, except what I have to pay for it but, again all I could get in the sticks. If you can get cable sir, do it, weather has little effect on it unless of course a tornado happens to drop by. I don't know about Hulu, Netflix or that other stuff, just trying to keep it K.I.S.S. here in the sticks.

I always try to call when foreign call centers may be offline, or at least insist on speaking with someone I can understand.
A box that's 11 years old or more may not be able to receive anything as they- DIRECTV®- changed systems in order to be able to broadcast more HDR, and laterUHD. Sorry you had that experience.
I have DIRECTV®, Netflix and Prime, and use all of them too much.

Directv went downhill before the AT&T buyout for me.
After 25 years with them I got an oral agreement to cancel a contract since I put my house on the market.
A few years later, I found out my FICA score took a 150 point hit.... it was listed as being on par with failure to pay a credit card off the way they filed.
I hope the company goes bankrupt....

In regards to the old boxes when I still had Direct Tv you could purchase the boxes from Sears and they had a SIM card. When I made a cross country move many years ago and cancelled my subscription they were not very happy that I owned my boxes. Heck this probably 20 years ago when they were purchased. As for ATT they say I owe them 500 for some unknown item when I turned in everything cables and all. ATT also got me for roaming fee's to the tune of 1500 dollars many many years ago. Most folks have forgot when ATT sold their old land line equipment to Carlos Slim as they built cell towers the shareholders took a royal beating.

I have to say that the service from Comcast has improved greatly. Of course they charge enough for it. 😨😨 When I was working the boss wanted to know why I bought Dell Optiplex workstations instead of their cheaper lines. I put him online with the standard tech support that comes with the Inspiron support and he never questioned any of my decisions again. Cisco night support was out of Australia. Slight language barrier but always good. I have a friend/co-worker for 20 years who is from Southern India and I hardly ever understand anything he says. Great guy and a good programmer though. It's funny because I can understand his father better than him.

Everytime I select a channel on DTV, it's one that has to have a special subscription, can’t wait to get rid of it, Dish Network is even more crappier.

AT&T is probably the most disorganized, and criminally ignorant of their customers, of any company in the world and they just keep buying up their competition. It's time for the government to step in again and actually dismantle them this time.
