Finished up my first pipe. Learned a lot of what not to do and that I'm working with wood and rubber and not metal. I tend to have a heavy hand and need to learn to take just a little off at a time, not all of it at once. I'm fairly happy with it but know I can do a lot better with practice.

Nice first shot at it...a stack...should be a fine smoker! Glad you are giving it a try, Ken.

Hey man! That's great! If that's your first pipe, then you're off to a fantastic start. I didn't attempt a shank cap until after I'd done about 7 pipes. So, personally, I'm sincerely impressed. Great job, brother!

Also, good on you for starting out by cutting your own stems. A lot of guys don't do that, but it will benefit you tremendously in the long run.

It has a nice compact size, that looks like it would deliver a nice long smoke...a great combo to have in a traveler.
A pretty nice looking pipe for a first.

That's an impressive first pipe. I'd be happy with that as a 10th pipe.
Well done. You've obviously a knack for this.

Wow, congratulations. Now you need to begin the bent bulldog. Joking of course. :-)
That is a really, really nice stack!
If I were to foray into pipe making though, seriously, I would try to make a bamboo shank pipe at some point. They're so expensive on the regular market. You could make yourself one very inexpensively.

Okay, itβs not an $1,100.00 Eltang but mine looks almost as niceπππ Mine......On the way Eltang $1,100.00........

Thanks for the compliments. I took it on it's maiden smoke with some Uhles 00, it was an hour and a half smoke. I need to thicken the wall up on the bowl on the next one because it got pretty hot. I'm making a new stem for it because I made the end to narrow and it's hard to clench not to mention some other mistakes I made. I watched some U tube videos and learned some things I did wrong and will work to improve in the next pipes I make.

Here's number 2. Not what I envisioned because it was supposed to be a bent shank but I broke it off while turning the bowl. When life hands you lemons and all that. I turned it down and had some aluminum 3/16 tube and made a slip on stem. I played with the dye and did two colors on it. It smokes really well and is pretty light. Now that I made that bowl I might try and make a couple bowls for my Kirstens.

Not bad at all, Ken...You can start making your own metal pipes now! What stains did you use for that?

Not bad at all, Ken...You can start making your own metal pipes now! What stains did you use for that? I used black to make the grain pop and sanded it down with 2000 grit and used tan as the final color. The other pipe I used yellow as the base then orange as the final. I love playing with the colors to see what I come up with. I have 18 different dye's to play with.

Really like the three rings on the bowlπππ I'm making a chisel for ring work because I couldn't get a consistant groove. I have a set of Harbor Freight specials that I'm using to make specialty chisels.

That second pipe is brilliant. I like your thinking... You weren't defeated by the hic up, but thought outside the box. Go you.
