It's Russ from Pipes & Cigars.
Because our system still isn't capable of handling the volume of orders for Esoterica without creating backorders and disappointing people, we had to come up with a way to make sure it doesn't happen again. You will notice that the Esoterica pages have been removed from our site and orders can't be placed via the internet. From now on, we will announce the arrival of an order on social media and you will have to call 800-494-9144 to place your order. We will apply restrictions to how much you can buy based upon the size of the order we receive from the distributor. We are working to fill the backorders first. Once they are taken care of, a post will be put up letting you know we have product for sale.

Unfortunate that they are doing it on social media, they presuppose that their loyal customers are on Facebook or whatever other social media site... a lot of people do not want to deal with them sites.
Allowing customers who opt for a notification, with an account to be emailed an alert seems like that would be a better way to go.

I know of one or two other retailers who post availability of Esoterica on Facebook. I'm not crazy about that myself as I rarely use Facebook.

Although I will never use them again, I give props to Iwan Ries on how they do theirs.
Speaking of IR I just got a notification for a 250g box of 1792... if you only knew the battle I was having with myself right now!!

I have 4 days to respond to it before it goes to the next person. That will give me time to think on it. The problem was it took too many phone calls to get it straight the last time.
I'm sure IR will get another shot one day against my will. I gave P&C several chances and they havent disappointed me with my last several orders.

Not a facebook user either. This and pipesmagazine are as social media as I get. I've made a couple of YouTube video tutorials when asked for technique demonstrations, but that's about it.

I got a voice mail I missed earlier about my order for some Esoterica. I don't even remember what it was but they'll call me back tomorrow and I'll see if I can get the order placed.
I won't order anymore if I have to use Face F@#k to order it. My B&M notifies me when they get some in and will hold it for me until pipe club. It's a little more cost wise but I'm assured of getting some.

I like the Iwan Reis system as well. It actually works better than any other. I got a 4 day reserve notice for Skiff. I don’t need any presently, but if any Patchers need any, pm me. Evening |

Considering it's popularity, is there any particular reason why the blenders don't increase production?
Wouldn't have anything to do with maintaining it's high price would it?

Sam Gawith uses old equipment... really old equipment, a pretty small operation I think that if they tried to expand production tge quality would suffer. |

They had a method that was not working. Good on them for at least trying something different. I agree with several of you that Facebook might not be the best route to go it is a least an attempt to change the broken system. Once something gets moving it is easier to keep it moving until it settles onto a good solution.

I got my call and ordered a bag of Margate. They are allowing one 8 oz bag of Esoterica per order. When all the back orders are filled and if any is leftover they will go through the list again until it is sold out. When they use FB it is the same process, only one bag of choice per order and it has to be by phone. I asked about those of us who don't use FB and if we could be notified by email and it is something that they might do in the future.
They are doing the same with Germain's and I grabbed a tin of Bridge Old Brown Flake. I never heard of it but figured I might as well try it given the opportunity.

Last I heard one of the old employees/partners passed away and they were running at full capacity with their staff. There might not be many young people interested in working at a pipe tobacco blending house. Also there just might not be that many people on Jersey. I dont think they are charging anymore than previous but retailers are charging full retail or much higher due to demand. Used to be retailers would sell below MSRP not way above it as many are. |
