I've posted this story a few times over the last 6 years but there's a lot of newer folks here and figured I'd post it once more! My Dad told me a funny story about my Uncle Frank the other day. Uncle Frank was not one for doctors or check-ups ... just hard work and living right. However, when he turned 80, my Aunt Jacobine put her foot down and demanded he at least get a check-up. So, reluctantly, he made an appointment for the next day. After the usual poking, prodding, blood tests, etc., he was given a clean bill of health. The doctor actually thought Frank was in his late 60's until he asked. Before leaving, Uncle Frank said, "Well go ahead and get it over with"! The doctor, quite confused, said, "Get what over with?"? "You're going to tell me to quit smoking", Frank replied. "I didn't even know you smoked!", exclaimed the doctor. "Yep, been smoking a pipe for 73 years ... started at the age of seven". "Well, my advice to you is to NOT quit smoking ... that would be the worst thing you could do at this point"! Uncle Frank went home quite pleased with himself and continued smoking another eight years. I'll never forget that man and his influence on me!

Darin, great story, thanks for sharing. I can relate, very similar with my grandfather. To this day he is often in some of my fine memories when I’m enjoying a pipe late night sitting on the back deck contemplating my past.

So you did, Darin. So you did. That's a great story. I hope to have a similar story to tell when I'm 80.

Thanks for sharing Darin. I had not heard that story, thanks for posting it again. Piping is such a special thing, this story is very reassuring as I am also not a fan of going to the doctor. Hope I’m in the same shape as him when i get that age!

Thanks guys ... he was a calm, easy-going gentleman and I always associated that with the pipe as a kid.

...I've heard or read so many stories like this that my use of tobacco does not concern me in the least...

Thanks guys ... he was a calm, easy-going gentleman and I always associated that with the pipe as a kid. ...I believe this is the trick... chain-smoking four packs of cigarettes in a day is one thing... smoking a pipe in itself is conducive to calmness and a balanced state of mind...

Agreed ... quiet contemplation vs. a rushed chemical need. Big difference!

Great story!
I will always say genetics plays a HUGE role, and as Martin said, apples and oranges compared to coffin nails in product, and smoking technique. I average two bowls per day, three tops...In modern culture, I think far more people should be concerned with what they eat if they want to live longer.
