At the Chicago Show in 2016, I had bought a Stanwell Hand Made 64 with registration number; probably from the 60s. Even though the bowl was quite scorched and the vulcanite had oxidation burnt into it from a buffer, I bought the pipe for a few reasons. The main ones being that reg. no. Hand Mades were the best pipes that Stanwell ever made plus the pipe was rather unique.
For those of you familiar with Stanwells, you probably know the difference between 63 and 63M as being the 63M has a military mount. This pipe is stamped 64, but should be a 64M. However, I can’t find mention of Stanwell having a 64M shape. Plus, the general shape of this 64 differs from a Legend 64 from the early 2000s that I have. The Legend 64 is much wider and is flat at the base of the bowl plus it has a round shank. This Hand Made 64 is more pointed at the base of the bowl and has a fat oval shank with military mount.
I've been meaning to get this pipe back into smoking shape. However, even though I have mudded scorches before, this bowl scorching was serious enough that I decided to seek professional help. Many of you are probably familiar with Chance Whittamore of Great Estate Pipes. Although people know him for his eBay auctions of restored pipes, most people don’t know that he also offers restoration services. Having bought several pipes from Chance, I am quite familiar with the results of his restoration work. I took the pipe with me to the Chicago Show this year to show it to him and ask if it was possible to fix the scorching and make the pipe safe to smoke again. He said "no problem".
The pipe arrived in the mail today in today and it looks like a brand new pipe! I am ecstatic with the result. Here’s a bunch of pictures spread out over several posts.

Stanwell just doesn’t make pipes any more like when they made them in Denmark: Diplomat 63, Legend 63M, Legend 64, Hand Made 64 (left to right): No dust on the pipes, but I think it’s time to dust the rack... 😜

It looks like you took a chance and are reaping the rewards.. a great restoration giving new life to a deserving patient.... what a beauty, and thanks for the great write up!
I have the El Cheapo Stanwells that are very good utilitarian smokers at work, but a Stanwell of this pedigree looks to be in the nicer pipe bag for special smokes.

Very nice pipe, John. I have a 63M from the early 2000s, before they moved to Italy as I understand it. It's one of my best smokers. Enjoy your restored 64. It's a beaut!

Stanwell shutdown the Danish factory and began to use Italian contract manufacturers in 2008/2009. Danish makes are stamped “Made in Denmark” and Italian makes are stamped “Danish Design”.

John...I'm a Stanwell guy and have also never seen one stamped as 64m. I've got 2 Stanwell shape # lists, including the far more extensive one put together by Basil Stevens, and no mention of other than a 64 by Sixten Ivarrson. IMHO, I think the 2 pipes you're showing are unique enough from each other in shape and heft that they could've (should've) used a different / new shape number for the more recent of the two. And by the way...your 64's are really nice. Do you have other Stans? Someone should start a "show your Danish-made Stanwells" thread. ;-)

I have 13 Stanwells; 10 Danish and 3 Italian. The Danes are Diplomat 63, Legend 63M, Legend 64, Hand Made (reg) 64, Hand Made (reg) 29, Hand Made 118, Flawless 54, Featherweight 244, Royal Prince 181, and Legend 25. I know a pipe shop in Amsterdam that has a drawer and a half of NOS Danish Stanwells. Too bad, Stanhill isn’t still here. He had a super impressive Stanwell collection.

Yes. Nice presentation each time. Why have we not seen Stanhill since last year? not sure. I think something happened that made him take a leave of absence from the forum, but I'm not sure what.
