RE: Cost of blanks (ebauchon?) of briar.... Can anyone say with certainty that there is no huge supply of locally grown briar root somewhere in that vast country? If there is, the cost to the factory would be a small percentage of what our artisans pay.

RE: Cost of blanks (ebauchon?) of briar.... Can anyone say with certainty that there is no huge supply of locally grown briar root somewhere in that vast country? If there is, the cost to the factory would be a small percentage of what our artisans pay. Been wondering the same thing myself. It would make sense that the Chinese have been growing their own briar root from an economic standpoint. My 3 other Chinese pipes arrived. The Bamboo Dublin looks well made but the other two are quite chunky & the flow from the mouthpiece to the stummels don't have a smooth transition. They seem a bit amateurish. The three plainer Road Town briars from my previous order are more to my liking than the chunky Bulldog & bent 'Diamond shank' army pipes.

The best pipe grade briar is native to the Mediterranean regions. I have never heard of briar existing in China at all. There is a variety of briar in Australia I believe, so it might be possible?
