I sold a Seiko watch earlier this morning on eBay. No taxes were added to the sale and I was not charged any taxes.....so far. If that changes I will post. If eBay starts taxing their fee’s I’m done with them. It’s like I already have a partner when I sell an item using eBay!!!

They taxed me on the purchase. Wanted to buy a pipe and lo and behold - 6% tax was included in the bill. The sellers fees are taxed for Canadians. 15%!

Leon, so far not here in the States......no taxes on eBay. To make ends meet I’m selling a few of my knives on eBay. Getting my price but after PayPal fee’s, eBay fee’s and a Seiko rare watch I shipped out today for $21.65 heavily insured and signature required the total fee’s at the end will cost me just over $85.00 on a watch I sold for $575.00.

In New Mexico they passed a law taxing internet sales. When I bought a estate pipe off Ebay this week, it had NM tax added on it. With a noted indicating that it was New Mexico tax.

N Carolina now taxes internet sales. I’ve yet to be taxed from eBay. Also, I received an order from Amazon last week shipped from Kentucky, I was not taxed. Definitely taxed on ALL pipe and tobacco retailers now shipping to NC.

I would imagine that taxing is more of a state mandate, instead of an Ebay requirement.

I noticed I am being taxed on new goods on eBay but not on used goods. I’ve been getting hit on Amazon for a while now.

Its not really an issue of paying taxes. It's how do we know that those $ do actually get transferred to our province (state) budget and not just getting pocketed by guy in California?

I just bought a used saddle off of ebay. When I had input my billing info, which is in Kentucky, ebay said that the State of Kentucky was making them collect sales tax on all sales shipped to the state, and handing it over to the state. When I changed my shipping address to here in North Carolina, where I am currently working, they removed the tax. I paid no tax.

The whole sales tax model is not so simple anymore. I sed to think I understood it, but now I don't.

Its not really an issue of paying taxes. It's how do we know that those $ do actually get transferred to our province (state) budget and not just getting pocketed by guy in California? Tax is so complicated all retailers use tax calculation software. This software automatically reports tax collected to a common interchange of government tax authorities. Retailers must send checks quarterly to all these government entities (state and local) in the amounts reported. Taxes charged for out of country shipments are handed differently. Value of goods must be stated on shipping documents and the receiving country determines tax to be applied (and collects it). I may not be 100% correct on this as of today, but reasonably accurate, I think. implemented retail systems for many years.

I don't know I just purchased 300 dollars worth of stuff off fleabay from all over the country and no taxes applied. That being said purchases from larger companies online always charge taxes ex Honeywell, Lee Jeans, Micron.

I'm still confused....but it has nothing to do with ebay...just a general state of confusion...probably because I'm old.

That being said purchases from larger companies online always charge taxes ex Honeywell, Lee Jeans, Micron. Another rule they used to use (I don't know if they do anymore) is sales tax was only applied to new goods. Used goods and services generally not subject to sales tax. Sales tax is collected based on the destination of the goods purchased. Most well known retailers have collected sales tax for a long time IF they had B&M stores in state of destination. The issue with etailers (online only retailers) is they have no B&M storefront and so did not have a need to collect sales tax for any shipment. Maybe for any shipment out of their own state. Now states and federal govt changing all the rules, so all these tax free shipments are now getting subjected to sales tax.

Yikes. That's another layer of crap. I wonder will it happen in the UK? We don't have any VAT. The internet is a GOLD mine for the thieves in US State Government. Out of state Municipalities do not have to spend a penny on infrastructure, roads, sewers, electric lines or maintain a building like they would with a brick and mortar, yet they charge the same sales tax rate. Straight up thievery. Its why we threw tea in the Boston Harbor....no taxation without representation!

Bostoners resented the tea monopoly, so they attacked ships carrying the monopolist's tea.

I noticed I am being taxed on new goods on eBay but not on used goods. I’ve been getting hit on Amazon for a while now. I've been hit with the tax on used goods, which really frustrates me. In my state, "occasional sales" of value less than $600 are not subject to sales tax, or else you would have to remit sales tax on your garage sale proceeds.
eBay is just being very lazy about this. They collected tax on a sale that is explicitly not subject to sales tax.

I think it’s state by state. I recently bought something on eBay from a California seller and was charged 6%. Another item from another state, and was charged no tax. Cali has to find a way to pay for all that “free stuff” they’re handing out.

I believe it's based off of either: Over 100k in sales into any one state you have to account for sales tax Over a certain number of transactions in one state you have to account for sales tax

Could be the stuff I purchase from fleabay is almost always new. I often buy Rv items and some of the dealers do indeed charge tax.
