What are your favorite British pipe brands? If you had to choose three?

Good question Don, since I own four Comoy’s made from oil cured Algerian briar they are now my favorite British Pipes.
My two Dunhill Pipes that were my grandfather’s have much more meaning then just smokers!!!
My GBD’s I owned prior were gifted to a friend back on Long Island that drooled every time he saw them. When I moved down South I gifted all six to him. I miss them but know they are in good hands and greatly appreciated.

I voted but am at some disadvantage as I currently have only three from that list in smokable condition. The GBD's are my best English smokers, followed by the Comoy's and BBB's. I do have a Dunhill Shell Briar and 4 Dot Sasieni out for restoration. My opinion might change upon their return.

What are your favorite British pipe brands? If you had to choose three? The only British blends I've tried are Ashton Consummate Gentleman (very nice) & SG Firedance (Not so good) I've got a tin of SG Black Forest that I've yet to pop. There's so many that I'd love to try, Germain's Plumcake for one, but they're always out of stock at TobaccoPipes. Edit; oops, pipe brands not tobacco blends ........ doh!

An English blend poll might be in order...... Lol. I voted, but it's more a vote of preference as I don't own any British pipes.

I could only say GBD is my favorite as I only have them. I have a Comoy but need to get it in smokeable condition.

I do own two estate Dunhills, so I selected Dunhill. There are a lot of English pipes which are not listed. For example, I also own a Savory Pipe. H.L. Savory started making pipes in 1886 and was bought by Dunhill in 1936. They are not a "seconds" line of pipe by Dunhill as many believe.
I also own a 1896-hallmarked Salmon & Gluckstein pipe. In the early 1900s, Salmon & Gluckstein had more pipe shops in England than any other company.

JimInks needs to vote. He has some sweet Charatan's from Matt Dillon.

GBD and their seconds. I've owned three Dunhills and will never buy another.

Dunhill is like Harley Davidson or Bose, where the Sheeple must own the same thing as everyone else for peer acceptance, so I will never own one. I personally like the large Charatan and Upshall pipes.

No Brits in my rotation, so I didn't vote. I have been close to a few GBD and Barlings, but was out-bid... I really do dig that classic, understated elegance many British pipes carry so well.
Someday!

JimInks needs to vote. He has some sweet Charatan's from Matt Dillon. ... aka, Cannon, the role for which I best remember him. I never watched Jake and the Fat Man (1987-1992). I was a yuppie during its run and watched very little TV. I voted Dunhill, Charaton, and GBD, but I've only owned a Dunhill and a Parker (a Dunhill second?). I like the Parker better than the Dunhill. The Dunny has thin walls and invariably smokes hot.

I went with Dunhill and Ferndown.
Ferndown is all-handmade, with all handmade stems.
Dunhill is arguably the king of “factory” pipes, with hand cut stems on (mostly) frased stummels.
They’re really rather different categories.

I might have taken GBD or Comoy’s as a third place option, but the modern day pipes stamped with those brands are a pretty uneven lot.
You can’t just buy any pipe labeled “Comoy’s” and be certain of its quality, the way you can with Dunhill.
Some are genuinely very good. Some aren’t.

I have heard enough guys comment on Dunhills also varying in quality or smokabilty through the years, that I don't really want to pay the price of admission to find out. I am very happy with good British Comoy's, GBDs and Barlings. Modern French Comoys are just that, French.

The only two I own were my gradfather’s from the 30’s and 40’s, only smoked on special occasions.

The 1926 Patent Bruyere is easily one of the best smokers in my collection. My 1976 Red Bark is also a decent smoker but I have a number of pipes that I enjoy more. The only reason I bought the Red Bark in the "antique" shop was because of the price. The Savory I recently acquired is actually a better smoker than the Dunhill Red Bark.

The sad and uneven quality came from the 80s and 90s production in Southend. Modern GBDs are still made in Southend and they are generally ... not great. Cheap stems cut from blanks. Sloppy fitment. Just very overpriced.

Price is a whole ‘nether ball of wax. i only own one modern production Dunhill and it is made to precisely the high standard one would expect. Good drilling, wide open draw, a fine and comfortable button, etc. Nothing made of agricultural products like Briar wood will ever be precisely the same decade after decade, but one can strive to meet a standard for quality

For the English pipes, definitely Dunhill. I own four, and of modern production, and they are absolutely fine quality and fine smokers. I see a lot of criticism of modern Dunhill, and while I haven't owned or smoked a vintage Dunhill, I don't get the criticism. Mine are among my best. I have no regrets in the investment. I rank them with my Castellos, which are the best of the Italians.

sperrytops........your selection of pipes is a great one. My favorite Italian made pipe without a doubt would have to be Radice. For its overall quality, craftsmanship, plus if your a good hunter you can locate a Radice at a very reasonable price. Sante, May he Rest In Peace felt the same as I did. He once made a statement on a forum if he only had one choice in a pipe manufacturer it would be Radice. Don’t get me wrong, Castello makes fabulous pipes 👌👍👍

I've heard a lot of good things about Radice (beyond your excellent comments), though never owned one. Are they still in business? From the sound of it, they are no longer made. My choice of Castello on the Italian side was based on my limited range experience. I know from various discussion that there are some very good Italian makers still out there. It seems interesting that the art seems to be alive and well with many makers in Italy, yet experiencing a loss in numbers in England. Do you have any thoughts on that, Ted?

The older English made Pipes are of top quality and well aged briar. I have many old favorites from the UK....GBD, Comoy’s, BBB and my grandfather’s old Dunhill Pipes. Nope, not a newer maker from England that I would be interested in owning. The custom made from England are way out of my price line now!!! Radice Pipes are still made today. The original family owner of Radice, Luigi Radice started out working with Costello pipes prior to going on his own.....I think back in ‘61. Radice is still family manufactured today.

Some of the best estate buys are those pipes bearing the name of an English pipe shop. They were produced by major players, Astley's and H. Jones being a couple of examples.

I have 3 Dunhill, 1 GBD, 1 Barling, 1 Sasieni, and 1 BBB in my collection. The best smokers among them in order are Barling, Sasieni, BBB, Dunhill, then GBD. So, I voted my top three.
