Some of the best estate buys are those pipes bearing the name of an English pipe shop. They were produced by major players, Astley's and H. Jones being a couple of examples. Astley's had some extremely fine makers on the back side. Sometimes they are identifiable from the style. Charatan's Make, Ferndown, Upshall are all known to have made Astley's branded pipes at one time or another. Dunhill has been rumored.
Some less-fancy pipe shop names are good deals, too.
"Imperial" and "Bewlay" were stampings used by Imperial Tobacco, generally made by the Oppenheimer factories (Comoy's, CIVIC, GBD, et al)
Fribourg and Treyer made pipes right up until the shop closed, and they're generally very fine. I have no idea who actually made them For all I know they could have been handmade in house. Their "rejects" often turn up on eBay, and even the rejects are rather fine pipes.
Tinder Box, the American chain, stamped their name on a ton of pipes, but some were extremely fine high-grades. The "Tinder Box Unique" stamping only appears on handmades from Charatan's, but they go for much, much less money than a pipe with a Charatan's Make stamp.

Owning 15 Charatans I'd have to say they are my fave Brit pipe but only those made pre '85 . On a par with my Charatans are my 12pre '80s BBBs. With these being oil cured Algerian Briar. It goes without saying pre transition Barlings are on a par with the same era Charatans. JMHO

Definitely don’t need another, it’s the “ want that beauty “ I can’t get out of my head.

While I don't own a Barling the older ones would be my choice....I used to be a Comoy fan as that was the first pipe I ever bought back in 1961...followed up by GBD, of which I have several....seems the older pipes were well made and of quality briar...would love to own an older Barling...but money being hard to come by, it will have to remain on my wish list...these days I will hold what little money that makes it way into my hands will be for an Rd made pipe made by Ron Powell...all his pipes are top quality and it is a pipe that I have never heard a disparaging remark made about. They are all beautiful to the eye and the drilling superb.

Ashton, James Upshall and Comoy's. In that order. The older, the better.

I have several English pipes of all kinds. They all smoke very well with at least one blend. I really can't say that one is better than the others. They range from no-name to Dunhill.

I think I own or have owned Upshall, Comoy, BBB, GBD, Hardcastle, Willmer, Barling, Singleton, Parker, Jobey and maybe a few others. I too, find that they are all mostly good smokers. I have had a few with really tiny airways though. I find a lot of good British pipes in the antique malls. Hoping to find a few more in the morning tomorrow. We shall see.

I own 3 Shell Briars and a Red Bark so I’m partial to Dunhill. I really do enjoy each one. Charatan would be runner-up: I own a single Distinction pot and it’s one of my favorites.
But then again, I don’t own much else that is British. I’ve banked on the Dunhills and apart from a corporate-era Barling and a pre-60s Bewlay, everything I have is Italian; because that’s where my favorite makers are.

No pipes jumped out at me at the antique mall today. Maybe next time.

I'm an all things Dunhill enthusiast, enchanted by that little White Spot. My first pipe collection was around 70 Patent era billiards including 2 unsmoked pipes that I broke in. I sold/traded that group for the start of a Danish pipe collection but soon after settled on 30some newer, much larger group 6, ODA and Collectors that I still enjoy today.

This poll might be more fun split into two polls: things you can still buy new, and things you cannot buy.

Ashton, James Upshall and Comoy's. In that order. The older, the better. A good Ashton is practically unrivaled.
Unfortunately they're not all good Ashtons...

Mine are. My last-ever Ashton was drilled by an animal. Something had mauled the inside. The mortise looked like a rodent's den.
There are some beautiful Ashtons and I love their classical shaping, but consistency isn't the game over there.

Had to put a check next to Comoy's after smoking my newly acquired, older one. I like it... a lot.
