Normally when I am away from home, I never post about my absence, but I have family members staying at my home....The wife and I embarked on a road trip through Arizona to see some of the places we wanted to revist, and visit places we have not been. After spending a couple nights in Sierra Vista, southern Arizona visiting Tombstone, Bisbee, Ft Huachuca military museum, Went down into the Queen mine and Kartchner caverns...last night the hotel had free snacks out and I ate some salsa and chips. About midnight, I woke up with food poisoning...never had it before, man that is a bad experience! Late morning all the bad stuff let up, so I decided to drive us to Springerville in Northern Arizona....283 miles, no big deal since I drive a lot...famous last words. There are two ways to go, you can jump over the state line into New Mexico for a less scenic, but nice ride. A co-worker had told me that if I have never seen the Morenci mine, AZ 191 (The old 666 route) is a trip not to miss. After you leave Morenci, it drops you into the mining town of Clifton. The turns are too tight for big trucks, so there are numerous signs letting the truckers know that at a certain point there was a last chance to turn around. We travelled by car...this is from a motorcyclists perspective. excessivelocity.blogspot.com/2009/05/arizona-191-old-666-devils-highway.htmlI went as quick as I could without freaking the wife out, but...it was like the road to hell...the pavement was in very good shape, but with showers coming down, many turns had plenty of sizeable dislodged rocks that I navigated around...hoping no boulders were teetering. After a night of no REM sleep, and retching all night, I was pretty dehydrated even though I drank like a thirsty camel. Typing this post out to stay awake, because when I do go down, I told the wife I will be in a full coma sleep, housekeeping will probably harass me to get up. Canyon De Chelly tomorrow. What tobacco do you smoke when dealing with food poisoning? None!

Sounds fun, but for the Devil's salsa.
Though, I bet that can be a really fatiguing ride on a motorcycle.

Sounds like a bendy road. I must check it out on Google maps.
Sorry to hear about your food poisoning. Enjoy the rest of your trip.

Charlie, bad enough you drove that road in a car, can you imagine how cautious one would have to be on a motorcycle....just deadly. Food poisoning, your lucky you made it home. Feel better ASAP and rest today with a sick day off. But, I’d bet you went to work!!

Sorry for the salsa sickness Charlie. I'm sure it kept you from enjoying the road. I may have to look it up next time I'm in Arizona. I had a somewhat similar experience with my wife in West Texas many years ago. We were in Fort Davis when she got sick and the nearest hospital was in Alpine, some 80 miles away. The drive through the twisting mountain road was in the worst thunderstorm I have ever seen. Almost continuous lighting so that I was blinded and could only see the road during lightning flashes. My hands ached for a week after. Got to the hospital just at sunrise on a Sunday morning. The roof was leaking and there was a waterfall in the middle of the emergency room. They took Karen away and I collapsed. I woke up on a stretcher.

Wow Ron, that was a rough trip indeed! I am glad my wife didn't eat any salsa, or that would have ended the trip as she has serious gastrointestinal issues without the devils salsa. Still have lingering issues myself, nothing I cannot cope with though.

I feel for ya Charlie, I’ve had food poisoning a few times and its not nice. Hope you feel better.
Sounds like a stressful road and conditions to be driving. Can’t take your eyes off the road for a second. 👀

I've ridden bicycles in Southern Az down on the border a bit. Some incredible riding down there. That road looks perfect for bikes.

Unless I see free food put in front of me straight from the kitchen, I don't eat it. Many years ago most clubs would have bowls of salty peanuts sitting at the bar. The Health Dept started testing the free nuts. They found that far too many held detectable levels of e-coli bacteria. Apparently some people don't wash their hands after having a dump when they're drinking. Driving that winding road could not have been fun while you're feeling crook. I road bikes for around 30 years. 10mph corners, one after the other, are not fun. Drink heaps [those sports drinks are good to re-hydrate & replace electrolytes] & hope that you're feeling better after a solid nights sleep.

. Could've been worse though; imagine if you were on your bike. ] Yeah, I thought the same thing. I saw several guys with super duty trucks hauling large fifth wheel trailers, to each his own I guess. Saw one guy with his wife and kids right at the beginning, looking at the mine overlook. Should he have mechanical issues, he would have no place to get off the road putting his family at risk, a tow truck would take hours and cost a fortune... stupid, when there is an easy alternative.

I love drives like that! I drove from Roosevelt lake to Apache Junction on the Apache Trail through the Superstition mountains and at one point I could see the road I was on coming to what looked like an end, I looked to my right and way up in the air was a motorhome stuck to the sheer face of the cliff to my right! A few hundred yards further and the road I was on made hairpin turn to the right and I was now headed toward that motorhome. Just like you said, there were no gaurdrails and when I passed that motorhome we both had to creep inch by inch to get past each other. Had I been driving anything bigger than a car, one of us would have had to back up for God knows how far!

Food Poisoning: At first you hope you don't die. Then you hope that you will. And I'm only partially kidding.

Had only one episode of food poisoning (thank God) and it was so bad... (How bad was it?). No matter what end I put on or in the toilet it came out of both simultaneously. Yeah I know! TMI LOL!
Oh, Mauri's Pizza, never ate there again.

Food poisoning is definitely not for the weak, it can be brutal.

Whoa, what a trip, not all in a good way. Glad you survived!
But there was a clue that Satan was lurking in the area: ".... a co-worker had told me that if I have never seen the Morenci mine, AZ 191 (The old 666 route) is a trip not to miss."
That's the area between Beezlebub and Diablo, AZ.....

Still hoofing it up in the high country, so much pristine forests, Alpine Arizona is incredibly beautiful, but you really have to like snow. There are many roads where the signage says that there are no snow plows November- May.
A few years back, Arizona suffered from some pretty bad fires though, notably the Rodeo fire. The tribal lands seem to fare so much better as they perform controlled burns, the results are impressive, lush forests, lower fire danger.... the feds could do so much better.
An old saying... “When the white man first came to this country, there were no taxes, no debt, and the women did all the work, then he thought he could improve on the situation.”

Some of the most intense hours of my life. I hope that you are back to 100% soon. And I wish I was there.

Food poisoning is hell. Been through it before. It hits fast and hard, and within a couple hours I was on the toilet constantly holding a bucket on my lap.

I keep Pepto Down Ok (liquid version) but when it works it’s way through your system, it looks like you delivered the creature from the black lagoon. Pretty nasty, but works for me.
