It's been a long while since I've seen another pipe smoker..Other than in a smoke shop or a pipe show..I read that a lot on pipe smoking forums..Tonight a fellow on another forum said that some youngsters saw him smoking a pipe and they didn't know what it was..Now I'm wondering how many young folks have never seen a real in person pipe smoker.

This past weekend a friend brought his sons to camp. Aged 5 and 7. The seven year old watched me intently as I packed a pipe and asked me all about it. He even remarked "I thought only old men use these". I had a laugh at that. It's an astute observation in a way. Not that only old men take up the pipe, but those that smoke, have likely been doing it since they were young and it was more common.
He asked me if he could try and I told him I'd get him a pipe for his 18th birthday(16th if his old man was okay with it). Wonder if that is a promise I'll even be able to keep ten years from now?

Apart from two mates whom I introduced to a pipe, I haven't seen another pipe smoker since I was a kid.
I've heard a couple of people say 'Check out this guy. He's lighting up in public!' thinking that I was smoking weed.
A friend of a friends 9yo was quietly watching me clean my pipe & then pack a bowl with interest in their backyard a couple of years ago. Once I was puffing away he said "That's very old-fashioned, isn't it?" After a moments thought, realising that kids have probably only ever seen a pipe smoker on old movies, I had to concede "Yes, I suppose that it is."
Off course I didn't let the opportunity to explain the differences between pipe tobacco & cigarettes go by.

We have an old fellow in town (dirty Dave) who is always walking around with his corn cob filled with half and half just moseying on around. I’ve never seen him without his pipe in his mouth

Before marijuana became legal in Washington State, both the Sheriff and Highway Patrolman, gave me a hard look when smoking a Falcon. Now I mostly smoke a Cob when driving.

Another Pacific Northwesterner... I envy all of you. I have been obsessed with the region since I was a kid. I have a dream of moving out that way, but I don't know that it will ever be something I really do. I have actually been toying with the idea of taking a year or two to experience OR and WA before I settle down and buy a house- Likely in the woods of PA where I grew up.

On my way to the Detroit airport yesterday, when I stopped at a rest area, I was pleasantly surprised to see a guy standing there puffing away on his pipe. I was running behind on getting to the airport so I didn’t take time to pull out my pipe and say hi to him.

There are probably as many young folk out there that never seen a pipe smoker as there are those who haven't a clue how to place a call on a (and I say traditional because that's what it is) traditional dial telephone.
Just to say, I did meet a fellow pipe smoker in Walmart just the other day, had it in his mouth in store. Asked how he got away with it and then noticed it wasn't lit. We've been carrying on a email conversation and he seems like a right nice gentleman.

I still see the odd pipe smoker. I saw two in June. One was an old man smoking a cob. The other was a man driving a van smoking his pipe. I've never seen a woman smoking a pipe - EVER.
We had friends over the other day. It was a good day and the children were bouncing on the trampoline. I lit up my pipe and the visiting child said, 'Are you smoking?' I said, 'yes, but it's different than cigarettes.' She said something along the lines that I looked distinguished.
I took it as a compliment.

I see them sometimes when visiting Germany, usually around the local pipe shops: middle-aged, well-groomed men most of the time, puffing away while stopping by and window shopping. Back home, not really. My high school teacher smokes a pipe sometimes and me and some of my friends got introduced to the whole thing this way. I bought my first cheap Lorenzo after school one day, in a god-forgotten newspaper stand on the outskirts with a tin of Connoisseur's Choice. Got me hooked straight away. Funnily enough, when people started seeing me around with a pipe, it turns out a lot of them did smoke one at some point. So I know a lot of people who come out once, twice a year to smoke a bowl with me. Some do it more regularly. I also have a good friend who moved here from the US years ago and we go out every month for some beers and pipe. I try to do the same with my ex-teacher. There's also the occasional stranger who wants to get in on it. Always happy to give a few points on where/how to start. For some reason, it's often a conversation starter with waitresses. I don't look local (father is African), so add a pipe to it and I guess I seem interesting enough to talk to. I also got my boss who likes cigars a pipe recently. Maybe it'll become a trend So while I see them less around here, there's actually quite the community going on. There's at least two shops in a city of 250,000 which stock a considerable number of pipe tobaccos, pipes and accessories. Not too bad methinks.

I very rarely see anyone around me smoking a pipe in public. But...I live in an older neighborhood of 120 homes (built in 60's / 70's) in the upstate of SC. There is ONE guy about 15 homes down from me who smokes a pipe...just recently discovered it. My wife and I were out for a walk and she spotted him..."LOOK...he's smoking a pipe". Of course we called him over and that led to a chat. Since I refurbish pipes...I'm planning to do one for him as a neighborly gesture.

The PNW is like another planet...beauty all around you...many of the homes are 100 years old and very comfortable...loved living in Seattle...always able to see "the mountain"... Hope to go back one day with the wife and puppy.

I travel for work and have seen the odd pipe smoker in another car, but it is very rare. I do get a lot of sideways glances from the other hotel guests.

No idea, didn't ask. So now I just stick the snuff section and my copy and paste from WAYS.
Anyway... I'm still on a mission to convert my dad to a pipe instead of his pack and a half to 2 pack a day coffin nail habit.

Last week I was coming home from a canoe/fishing trip in The Quetico Provincial park. I had my sons in the car as we were leaving our hotel in Duluth MN and sitting at a light. I was smoking my old "World's Ugliest Pipe" MM Cob. I had the front window open and one of my sons said "Dad. That guy in the car is waving to you." I looked over and the guy in the next car gave me a big thumbs up and said, "Cobs are the best!"
The night before we were having a beer at Canal Park Brewing Co when my other son pointed out a guy that was smoking a pipe outside while enjoying the nice night.
The guy in the car was an older guy, my age or more and the guy at the brewery was about 30 or so.
So, I guess, even though we don't see them that often, there are still a few of us around.

For all intents and purposes we are engaged in a (mostly) solitary and indoor (or automobile) activity. The importance of Forums like this, is that it provides solace and camaraderie.

With rising prices, taxes, restrictions on where we can smoke, and general outside pressures.B&M's closing, tobacco companies ceasing production..It looks to me that we could be the last viable generation of pipe smokers..In the future pipes could be on a shelf in a history museum beside a rotary phone.

I was smoking my pipe on the Boardwalk in Tombstone last week (Pipe/ smoker friendly place). An Arizona Ranger came up to me, he was smoking a bent briar billiard... had a nice conversation.

Follow-up to my comment above. I stopped by my neighbor down the way this morning on the way into work and slipped him a nicely refurbished bent estate pipe and a nice tobacco sample. Just discovered him recently. I won't accost him with pipe attention, but thought I should make an appropriate gesture.

I'm one of two pipe smokers at my office. The other guy mixes cigar ends with cavendish aro blends.

Switched back to pipe last summer. Now my cigar store sells pipe tobacco and some very nice pipes you don't normally see like Allen Brothers and Grig. Probably converted over a dozen cigar smokers since last year that now include pipe smoking in there routine.

For as FEW pipe smokers that I'm aware of around me ...it's amazing that when I frequent the junk-tique stores within a drive...any pipes they had on the shelf were grabbed by a recent shopper. I wish I knew where these guys were!

The last time I saw someone smoking a pipe was at the beginning of June by my son’s school. I was so happy to see one of us. He told me he was smoking Half and Half. I don’t think I saw anyone else smoking this year. Whenever I see a little kid, they all stop and ask their parents ‘what is that’!
