hello peps. I have a question to you guys, and it sounds like this. I am fairly new to pipe smoking, and since I have started smoking pipe, I got this white coating on my tongue. Is that normal for all pipe smokers? I mean it is not totally white, but It is more white then befor I stared smoking, that is clear. My tongue has kind of changed. and I notice that after smoking some tobacco, it is worse then other tobacco. Do you guys have the same issue? I also notice that when my tongue stared changing, the tongue bit or burn started to go away. And maybe my tongue is just acclimated, and an acclimated tongue should look like that. if someone, pleas could help my to demystify, If this is the case for all pipe smokers or is it just my tongue there is something wrong whit......thanks Sorry my limited English.

I've had that happen. It's wise to have something cool to drink while your smoking. Also, cadence is important. "Sipping" a bowl will lessen tongue bite and give you more flavors to enjoy.

The white tongue may be as a result of chemical reaction between mouth tissues and tobacco pH levels (acid or alkaline). Here are a few URL's that discusses the relationship between sugar content and smoke pH: pipesmokersforum.com/community/threads/tobacco-sugar-ph-article.13538/pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/tobacco-phpipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/pipe-tobacco-tongue-bite-and-mouth-phwww.dental-health-advice.com/coating-on-tongue.htmlwww.google.com/search?q=pipe+tobacco%2Bwhite+tongue&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8Also, constituents in tobacco contain powerful vaso-constrictors that can adversely effect blood circulation to the surface tongue, gum, lip, and cheek tissues, which can cause gums to recede, alter taste and mouthfeel, and cause tongue surface structure that appears more hairy and white. Healing of mouth sores and irritation is slower due to less blood circulation to affected areas. Virginias and Burleys are typically higher in sugar and can bring about tongue burn more readily than other leaves. Failing to frequently alter the position of the stem tip and direction of smoke exposure to areas of the tongue, palette, gums, and cheeks will cause irritation to those areas, and possibly altered or permanent changes in mouth tissue. Puff gently and not too fast... use a relaxed pace. When relighting your bowl, draw in a few puffs lightly to get it going again. Use matches or bic style lighter, not a torch. Also, when puffing gently, keep one or both sides of the mouth slightly open so as to draw in some cool air along with the smoke. Take a break from smoking and liquor for at least a week or two, and don't brush or wash mouth with alcohol based mouthwash. Gargle and rinse mouth with salt water 2x/day...brush tongue lightly with salt water solution also. And as papipeguy suggests above, drink cool clear liquids while smoking to keep you mouth refreshed and flushed.

I agree with John. I would also recommend packing loosely, lighting light and having your tobacco sufficiently dried for proper moisture content. Some tobaccos will lose some of their mojo if overly dried; however, as a general rule I suggest to new smokers the drier the better until they figure out the cadence which best works for them.
It's a long journey and welcome aboard. By the way, your English is fine.

When fellow forum members take the time and effort to share their experience, knowledge, and research, original posters should show their appreciation by acknowledging and responding. I don't appreciate hit & run empty posts and inquiries.
