Early this month, Maine Gov. Janet Mills signed a bill into law that will tax all tobacco products the same rate as cigarettes and expand funding for tobacco use prevention and cessation in Maine.
“The primary purpose of the bill is tobacco abuse prevention and cessation,” said the bill’s sponsor Rep. Joyce McCreight, D-Harpswell. “This is because there are incredibly serious consequences of using the products.”
The law will raise the tax rate on tobacco items including pipe tobacco, small and large cigars, and e-cigarette products to match the tax on cigarettes, which are currently taxed at 43% of the wholesale price.
