The thread about the revolvers got me thinking about guns and I haven't done much long distance shooting lately and I miss it!
My son and my nephew and I got into this a number of years ago and they both bought 22-250 rifles and stocked up on Hornady ammo. I did a little research first and ended up buying a .223 They both laughed at me and made fun of me (partly because we just bust each others balls at every opportunity) and then I bought a box each of eight different ammos and spent considerable time at the range seeing what ammo my gun preferred. I ultimately chose Fiocchi and again they made fun of me saying I was shooting a pop-gun and drug store ammo. I showed them how the ballistics of the .223 is every close to the 22-250 and I showed them how my Ficchi ammo could group better than their Hornady at less than half the cost.
What clinched it was when we went to Colorado on a prairie dog hunt and they had to take $1000 worth of ammo and I took $400. They both shoot .223 now

Years ago I had a Shiloh Sharps and shot NRA blackpowder cartridge competition. I shot a 500grn lead bullet that we cast ourselves backed by 69grn of 2F black powder in .45-70. I took 3rd in my division at 500 meters.
That was a long, long time ago. I have an AR set up with a leupold 3x9 now, but haven't stretched it out yet.

My best shot, other than a few lucky prairie dogs, was hitting a one gallon milk jug at exactly 1/2 mile. My first shot was 6" right and my second shot hit the jug. My ballistics were 101" of wind drift and 406" of bullet drop.
I use an inexpensive variable 10-32 power Mil-Dot scope which is always on 10X for the Mil-Dot calculations, a better scope is my next purchase.

I was using a flip-up Vernier ladder peep-sight. That thing had the trajectory of a rainbow. You really had to shoot a lot and know your weapon. I seriously doubt I could do it today. But I've thought about trying, getting back into it again. It really expensive to get set up initially though

His shooting always impressed me, this 1000 yard hit on the second attempt was dead on perfect. Luckily I have enough property and privacy for long distance shooting.

Yeah, I love to watch Jerry shoot. Him and Bob Munden. I had one guy complain me about Bob Munden being a bragger. I told him that Bob only states factually what he is going to do, and he does it. His wife was quite the shot also.

If 30+ yards barebow with a longbow counts as "long distance", sure thing. 😁 [/URL]

More proof Miculek is a robot; I hadn't seen that one. How many inches was the drop? Er, what's 150 times 12? Wow.

I've never had a chance to shoot past 100 yards. When I got my Buffalo Classic I was going to put a Smith sight on it and try for a thousand yards, but my eyes are shot now. Can't hold the gun as steady as I used to.

Can't hold the gun as steady as I used to. You should still go for it. All long distance shooting is done from a rest anyhow, whither it be bags or buffalo sticks. You dont hold the rifle freehand. I cant do 1,000 yards anymore, but Id like to get back into 500yard steel silhouettes.

All of my friends ranches have too many trees. One has a target stop 266 yards from his house. I will probably be shooting that again in the fall. Last time out I couldn't hit it with anything but his 300 Win Mag model 70. Don't have to make any allowances for that one, just hold dead on.

I built a Savage 223 with a Boyd's laminated thumb hole stock and a big-arse scope for target shooting, but I can't ever see the holes. I can't tell if I hit the target so I can't make adjustments. That's why all my recent target work has been with the 450 bushmaster and the 45/70 Mauser. I can see those holes without a scope. The bushmaster is an amazingly accurate cartridge. It shoots much smaller groups than my 5.56 and 300 AAC carbines. Hornady ammo makes one ragged hole.

Jerry Miculek's long range rifle He holds the record for shooting targets with the 50. I don't think that scope would take the recoil.
