What are the lowest and highest prices for bulk tobacco at your local stores?
Mine seems to average $4.00/ounce. Online prices seem to be $2.50/ounce. I think the highest price bulk mine sells is the Latakia which is $5.50/ounce. So I am pretty reluctant about buying locally. I think local stores should be matching prices that the online stores sell it for.
Thanks

Matching online prices is impossible for most B&Ms. They have more overhead, less customers, and still have to somehow make a profit.
I'm sure a lot of them buy from the same places we do.
My B&M ranges between $3.50-5.00 per ounce. I'm 95% sure that 2 blends are Lane and 2 are PS.
I dont buy my pipe tobacco there, but I do buy most of my cigars from them.

The only B&M I have been to with prices similar to online, was one of those 'Smoker Friendly' franchise cigarette and RYO type joint in Knox PA. My mind was blown. They carried maybe three dozen blends tinned. It was an absolute jackpot. roadsdiverged is right though. Most places, I will buy a tin or maybe a few ounces just for the joy of being in the shop, but my cellar is stocked elsewhere. B&Ms do tend to have decent prices on pipes though.

Mine only sells his own blends, all at $5/oz, but that includes tax. And yes, his pipe prices are very fair.

Online retailers have made it a race to the bottom. Pipe tobacco is typically now only a 35% margin while cigars are keystoned. B&M has to pay for space, utilities, lounge, etc. Why most retailers forsake pipes unless local will support it.

The only cigar/tobacco store in Tall. to my knowledge has pretty much no tins and sells pounds of Lane tobacco for $80.00+ per.
Bad attitude and high taxes keep my butt out of the store.

I went to a local here in N Dallas. I decided to pick up an oz to try out and to support the business, it was over $7. Online it is. He even told me most of his blends were renamed lane blends.

The local B&M that sells tobacco by the ounce is in a mall and used to be my regular shop for many years..until it was sold and now the the prices have gone from cost plus 30% to MSRP plus 25%. the tobacco selection has dropped dramatically for tins while the bulks have increased in number but are near $8 an ounce for 1Q. Capt Black is $12.50 per pouch while Middleton blends are just under $10 /pouch and Half & Half is $7.50 /pouch. The selection of pipes has dropped ,unless you are looking for glass weed pipes and there are hundreds to choose from of those while briars number under 50,,including the Graybow pipes on the wall board display. I did ask the shop owner if he would be able to order me some Bengal Slices for me a few years ago and he gave me a strange look and said he did not have time for this and walked away from me and started to admire his selection water bongs. I am getting crabby just thinking about this again!

I have 2 local that I deal with, one in Ohio and one across the line in PA. My Ohio B&M charges $4.50 an ounce for Lane bulks and around $12.00 for C&D and GL Pease tins. The one in PA gets $8.00 for Sutliff bulks and has no tins other than Cherry Bomb. I cleaned them out of MB tins that were dated 2014 and 2015. My pipe club meets at Allegheny Smokeworks in Pittsburgh and they get around $8.00 an ounce for bulks but the bulks are SG, Dunhill, C&D, GL Pease and Esoterica. I just picked up some McClelland Oriental at $8.50 an ounce. Their average tin price is around $17.00 a tin and they have a lot of hard to get tins. They love when I come for pipe club because I will buy a good amount of tobacco from them not only because of rarity of some but also to support them because they support us.

There would be no local stores if they price matched the online stores...no way it can happen.
Our B&M gives us a comfortable air conditioned venue, an attentive staff that continually checks to see if you need another beer, card tables, three rooms for sports/ movies/ etc...and has to pay the employees, rent, taxes, etc....
An online business can operate out of their garage.
I cellared most of my stash before we had a relationship with a local tobacconist, but going forward I am going to spend money locally....he is not a gouger, but he has to pay the rent.
