I wonder at what price points can you tell the difference in what smokes better? Does a $90.00 smoke as good as a &150.00? A $150.00 like a $200.00? I have about 3 at the $125-150 range and got rid of the less expensive. But have an itch. TIA

If you are talking Peterson, I have several in different price ranges, and I only speak for myself, they all smoke well for me.

The only difference I can see, functionally, is in the System pipes. The "Standard" Systems are missing the tenon extension that was present in the original patents. You have to buy a "Premier" or "DeLuxe" System to get the complete System.
I have a System missing the tenon extension, and one that includes the extension, and I really think the extension helps.

Yes, Petersons. And all of mine smoked well, but does a $200.00 smoke better than on at $150.00?

Our main Peterson guy hasn't been posting in awhile. I have 12. None higher grade than a Kinsale. Sorry I can't answer your understandable question on the high grades.

Yes, Petersons. And all of mine smoked well, but does a $200.00 smoke better than on at $150.00? No.
My cheapest Pete was about $40 at retail. My most expensive, around $400. The worst smoker, by far, is my $400-ish Silver Cap Natural. That sucker is a dog. Beautiful to behold, but just not a good pipe.
The only functional difference by grade is the missing tenon extension in the System Standard.
All other Pete grading has to do with cosmetic issues. Grain quality. Flaw count. Fills. Silverwork.
A more expensive Pete is generally prettier than a cheaper one, but that has nothing to do with how it smokes.

Also, in my opinion, the Peterson System pipes are the only Petersons that are really worth going out of your way for. Their non-System pipes often have sub-par drilling, and Pete stems are almost never hand cut. Unless you just really love their shape catalog, it's hardly worth it. I have four Petes total. Two System, two non-System. One of the non-System pipes is OK, but not great. The other... well, it sucks.
The System pipes deliver exactly as promised. That's the point. You gotta use an extra pipe cleaner to swab the well after each smoke, but you're guaranteed a dry-as-a-bone smoke.

System pipe clean up can be improved by putting a small wad of cotton in the reservoir. Use tweezers to remove and replace. Double check after install that airway is not blocked. The post smoke soaked cotton, is useful for swabbing the bowl and building cake in a new pipe.

I have 6 Pete's , two system standards my father bought in London after the war, and 4 I bought in the '70s and all are well made and excelent smoking pipes. I have replaced all the p-lips with flat fishtails. I paid no more than $30.00 back then for my Pete's . I have no experience with todays Pete's sorry to say

On the other hand, I find the p-lip actually makes a difference.
It ain't the lip, it's the conical bore, altering fluid flow. If I could get a fishtail stem for a System pipe that has the conical bore found in the original P-lip, I would get rid of all my P-lips.
I don't much care for smoke brushed across my hard palate, but I do very much like the combined effect of the Peterson System.

It's not the smoke hitting my palate, it's the semi oval shape of the bit in cross section that does not work well at all with my dentures!

P-lips are like Laphroaig, you either love them or hate them.

Price alone is no guarantee of a good pipe. I have good pipes that cost almost nothing. A high price is very likely to get you a good smoking pipe, and I've not experience a dud that cost over $100. But a small sample, a few dozen. This applies to not just Petes but overall.

I have a dozen Petersons, and they are all good smokers, but some of them are better others. I have a lot of estate pipes and I think that Pete's take a long time to break in. I have a personal belief that Peterson in particular never stop getting better. Two of my best smoking pipes are Pete's that were smoked to death before I got them. One couldn't fit a pencil in the bowl. A few hours of cleaning it's beyond compare.

I like my Peterson pipes, but if I'm going to spend over $200 on a pipe now with what I know, I would buy a Radice.

Unbeknownst to me, there is a straight System Pipe with the condenser. An example showed up at SP Estates this week.

My theory is that some Petes are made with relatively less-cured briar, and so the heat of smoking will slowly force out moisture, and as cake builds, you've got a fine smoker.

The Burren is a new series that debuted a couple of months ago. Have not heard any reports, but they sure look good!
* also, with Laudisi/SP buying Peterson it is hoped/expected that quality control will become a priority.
