Gents, this is the only stamping on a nice sized freehand from 2016. Do any of you recognize the maker's signature?

With the J and the P, one first thinks Jeep, but obviously that's not it. Can't determine if that curlicue at the end of the P is another letter or just flair.

That is not a makers signature but in fact is my signature. I do that on my pipes so that when they are lost or stolen they can be returned to me. Thanks for finding it and please send it back to me ASAP!
Sorry - not seen that one before but hopefully someone has. Sure looks like a steady hand if that wasn't a stamp.

Reminds me of Jim Boswell's signature on his pipes...and his are hand done. Very steady!!!
I think the J and P are first / last name. Hopefully someone here has seen this signature.

How nice of a pipe is it. Does it seem Pro or talented Amateur?

It's not a stamp. That looks like it was done with an electric engraver. Cheap to buy, but hard to make any mark repeatably, especially in a tough wood like briar. I'd say this is the mark of a talented hobbyist.
An engraver is a way to leave your maker's mark before you're ready to spend money on a stamp.

It certainly looks like an engraver and is not a stamp as mentioned. However, there are a number of known carvers who signed their name with similar/same tools; Andre', J. Andrew, Micoli to name a few. I even have a custom Wiley, confirmed by Randy himself, that used a hand held etching device.
It might be a hobbyist but just because it is done by an engraver does not make it so. With that said, if no one can identify it, the pipe very well could have been made by either a hobbyist, local pipe maker less known to the greater community and/or a carver who was not in the scene long enough to be remembered. I would advise posting a few clear pictures of the pipe including the sometimes less obvious inside of the bowl, stem and shank (specifically the tenon and mortise areas). The level of workmanship can also give one a clue.
For now a date of 2016, not recognizing the maker and being etched makes me think it is a hobbyist..
It looks like the carver's name is Jess Pah..Who knows???lol

Here's the pipe. If it's a hobbyist...he's a very talented one.
