Well, they are home from the hospital now. Son went back to work, but I am not sure how he is able to do anything while worrying about his boy. The doctors identified a leaky heart valve and enlarged aorta in my grandson's heart. Not sure where things go from this point forward. We were not there when they got the diagnosis and were released. My son was never diagnosed with anything like this and we are now wondering if he has undiscovered heart anomalies too. Going to push for him to get a full cardio workup as soon as he can. I have an aunt who passed away in her fifties that had an enlarged heart and a pacemaker a first cousin has the same thing, both on my Dad's side. Dad and I have never had any issues detected, but who knows what can be missed. Both of us have high blood pressure. Thanks for the kind words and thoughts, all. Sorry to hear your grandson having health problems. I was diagnosed having a dilated aortic root and mitral valve prolapse. They do a scan on me every year and the best they can tell I was born with this and didn't know it. My dads cardiologist suggested I get checked because of my dads issues and it was hereditary, he had the valve issue but not the dilated aortic root. I'm 53 and have had no issues with it so far and I hope the little guy has no issues with it going forward.

Don I hope you don’t think I’m making light of his condition, thought about it and I sure you know or hope you know I take this very serious, I didn't think that at all, Brad. Your story brought me a smile and I sure needed one. I appreciate your concern and kind thoughts.

Diagnosis today from the cardiologist. Our grandson has a bicuspid aortic valve with aortic root ectasia. Both parents will now get tested and if my son also has this, then my wife and I will need to get checked. Was reading that 2% of the population may have this defect. My mother has a leaky valve, so maybe it is my side of the family. At least we have a direction to head in now.

Cancer killed her at 87. She was very active and played baseball into her 40s.

I only just saw this thread. I must have missed it when on holiday. It must have been a difficult and worrying time for you all. The stress of the unknown is crazy too. Is there anything that can be done to fix this, don?

Is there anything that can be done to fix this, don ? They have not made any recommendations yet. Other than having the parents tested and monitoring my grandson closely. He will require regular monitoring from a cardiologist and will probably require surgery one day to replace the valve. That becomes more likely as you age. Sounds like valve replacement as an adult is often a necessity, which also means blood thinners for life at that point. At least we know and can also get the rest of us checked for it.

I think it is really stressful for my son and his wife. Their hearts probably skip a beat every time he hiccups. It is good to know that it is fairly common and understood. Cardiologists are amazingly well educated and talented people. I thank God for how far medicine has come in this area.

Here is our little grandson at two months. He has more than doubled his weight! Healthy in all respects except for some issues with digestion and the heart valve defect. He is well loved and gets all the attention in our family right now. He is going to be a big guy. His hands make me think of Bill Jordan. They look big and strong. We have a family vacation in a few weeks and I will get a lot more time with him. Thanks for all your thoughts, comments and prayers.

Thanks Sean. Thanks Brad. Babies are a lot of fun. And a lot of work! Mom has it the toughest, then Dad, Grandma and Grandpa. In that order.

Great photo, Don. You must be so proud. I am Paddy! Just found out this morning that our niece is now expecting her first. We are her Godparents, so that is exciting news as well.
