Hello all!
Just joined up.
Real name: Walter Hettinger
Years a pipe smoker: I started smoking a pipe in 1968, quit 1995, resumed 2 years ago.
I smoke Virginias and VaPers, in the main.
Occupation: Retired ED physician (July 2015)
Interests: I was a pipe maker in Baltimore in the late 1960s and early 1970s and worked out of Jay's Smoke Shop. I stopped making pipes about 1977 while in residency ( Family Medicine), never did Family Medicine, grandfathered into Emergency Medicine and spent 36 years in the ED.
When I retired, I bought a small lathe and drill press and am undertaking the relearning of pipe making. Things certainly have changed. I used pre mold stems then, but am making them from rod now. I have made about 40 pipes and presently have 15 in the works. I am a shape first then drill carver, and my pipes look very retro a la the classic Danish Freehand style with modern embellishments. Prior to returning to pipe making, I never heard of a blowfish or a squashed tomato, etc.
I plan on taking some of my work to the Chicago Show (for critique, not sale), I haven't really thought about selling yet. I am smoking some of my pipes and gifting others to friends.
I participate in the Pipe Makers Forum, and the Pipe Smokers Forum, and have posted some of my pipes in both forums.
Other interests:
I am a Colonel in the District of Columbia Military Reserve (a title 32 militia), holding the position of battalion surgeon.
I am also a firearms enthusiast and load my own ammunition, and just started shooting clays with my son.
I am pleased to find a forum of this nature.
