Ammo for a K98 is not something one can buy at the corner store, if we had a corner store.
No, ammo for a K98, 7.97 X 57 JS or 8 mm Mauser ammo must come through an order placed on-line or over the phone.
Sadly, my three boxes of 8mm Mauser ammo arrived today. Instead of soft point hunting ammo, I received Full Metal Jacket suitable only for repelling Allied troops crossing the beach. Sadder still was my efforts at explaining the difference between SP and FMJ to a representative of the company I bought the ammo from. I feel very old now and perhaps I better take a nap?
Naps are always a good thing! The reason why I reload isn't because I can't buy ammunition, but because I can't buy the RIGHT ammunition. In some calibers it's available from the boutique ammo houses, but a couple of boxes cost more than the dies and supplies to reload a couple of hundred rounds. For instance, 44 mag wadcutters for short barrel revolvers. 500 grain 45/70, etc.

Reloading is often a solution to such problems. One other problem is getting the best performance out of that cartridge. Winchester, for reasons unclear to me, loads a 170 grain bullet on top of a very slight powder charge. We are talking muzzle energy of 994 ft lbs at 200 yards. European manufacturers load a 196 grain over sufficient propellant that ME at 200 yards is 2,235 foot pounds. Quite a difference. So, maybe I ought to invest in at least a Lee Loader and make some of my own. Instead of dealing with vendors???

I looked at that link. I spent $17.95 for 20 round boxes and free shipping so I do not know what that new pricing is about.

For no more than you shoot it a Lee Loader might make sense. You can always practice with the FMJs then reload the cases. What else do you have for hunting?

No. The order and the packing slip show the correct ammo at the correct price. Someone put the wrong ammo in the box and I think it was who I first spoke with om the phone who was a little fuzzy on the differences in types of ammo. "Hey, it is 8mm Mauser, right?"

A Krag 6.5 X 55 carbine with an 18 inch barrel. A gun which was given to me. Not sure why anyone would cut the barrel that short. Makes a nice noise, and the muzzle blast is awesome since the powder is slow burning and meant for a 30 inch tube. Half of it must combust outside the barrel, it seems. Good for dog pests. A.44 magnum carbine. Good for small critters and nosey neighbors. A shotgun with a slug barrel and rifle sights. Good to about 40 yards. Great for Tennessee woodlands but not so for open country like NM. My last good rifle was a .25-06 Ruger 77 with a great scope. That went to a friend who coveted it for a long time. The K98 came out of the blue so I bought it. I owned a Spanish Mauser decades earlier and lied it. I like the 8 mm cartridge when loaded to potential. On paper it looks great. Never had hunting experience with it.

I have had good luck with Sellier and Bellot Ammo in the past.

Yeah, that 6.5 would be good for anything reasonable with a 22" or longer barrel. 24 would be perfect.

This one used to belong to an old man from the Jicarilla Apache Nation. I bought a Springfield .30-40 carbine which was his. The Norwegian was added as a "gift". I like these Krags for hunting. No longer have the Springfield.

You can buy a new good bolt action for cheap these days. My Savage 223 was $179 about 3 years ago. With the Boyd's thumb hole stock and a scope I have around 300 in it. Henry is making a new single shot that's nice and has iron sights. Many calibers. Old H&R Handi Rifles are available cheap. It might be time to decorate your den with the old rifles.

I am afraid I do not care much for anything new. Another .30-40 Krag carbine or a 1917 Enfield pattern Winchester or Remington would suit me right down to the ground.

When it comes to military surplus I have tried most of them just stick with Masuer and be happy. The standard points will take down anything walking in Norte Americana.

You could always kill Bambi in the front yard and eat him. Provided you have the proper permit and he is in season.

Youse can fohget about dat dis time of da year. Best New Jersey accent. The Mule Deer have gone to the extreme high country for the Fall. You need to get where they are (top of Latir Peak) by helicopter. Elk are somewhat more present but you have to either bed down in a pasture irrigation ditch overnight or possess a Remington Ultra .300 delivering around 2,000 ft. pounds of energy at 500 yards. They are way out there in the open at the base of the mesa very briefly at dawn. Still, one never knows who will appear where and good to be ready. My approach has mostly been if an elk appears in my sights, fire will commence. I am not wearing my self out for nobody on dese mountains chasing anything.

I love the smell of Hoppes #9 they need to make a aftershave. The old Banner stuff comes out milky white and works great on the old salt based powders.

I don't use anything that can't be cleaned out with water or Hoppes #9 I know you are from Texas Ron, but what does this have to do with colonoscopy preparation?

If a few of you shoot milsurp ammo wit corrosive primers, I have some of the good old stinky stuff, I can ship a can off. Thank you. I have avoided milsurp ammo. It is mostly gone anyway by now, at least the 7.92 X 57 mm.
