I was thinking about making a calabash cob out of a cobfoolery general kit I have.
I think by putting shank close to bottom of bowl and put a plug in the middle with a draft hole in center it would create a calabash effect. The area above plug is bowl and under plug is cooling and drying chamber.
Ive seen two cobs used but not just one long cob divided by using a plug so I’m curious if the chamber under bowl needs to be round or larger than bowl? What type of wood should I use for bottom of bowl?If this method works I’d use briar but as a prototype I’ll use a hardwood with some pipe mud coating if needed.
Another question is about the core of a cob and why do they drill out core and replace with hardwood or putty? Is core too soft or is it cost effective to drill out the whole center core?

I use cherry wood for a plug. I buy 1/2 cherry dowel, use a 1/2 inch drill bit .... and Bob's your Uncle!
Not sure why they use a plug for the bottom. I've made MM cobs from MM seed that I planted and harvested. The core of an MM cob is very hard, almost like drilling through oak. The design of an MM cob is quite ingenious. The stem sets a tad bit higher than the bottom of the bowl so in theory once you've smoked down to the stem your draft will be above any tobacco on the bottom of the bowl and hence will not stay lit.

"Ive seen two cobs used but not just one long cob divided by using a plug so I’m curious if the chamber under bowl needs to be round or larger than bowl?"
Think Calabash or Meershaum with a coloring bowl. If you were to use one long bowl how would you define the smoking chamber from the condensation chamber?
"Another question is about the core of a cob and why do they drill out core and replace with hardwood or putty? Is core too soft or is it cost effective to drill out the whole center core"
Is done to decrease the chance the bottom falling out from wet smoking. Also reduces the chance that the bottom will burn thought. Which does happen. Btw, if you choose to plug the bottom of a bowl I very strongly suggest that you do not use putty or epoxy.

As an after thought, you may get better answers for your question over at Corn Cob Nation. Lots of luck with your Mod.

Thanks for replies. Well one positive is cobfoolery kits are inexpensive enough to experiment with so most of my investment would be time. I’ll just have to try it and see what happens.Im thinking a R Calabash type of effect.

Nice looking R Calabash cobs!
I’m really surprised aristocob doesn’t make a bunch more R Calabash because from what I’ve read they were a huge success.

Aristicob didn't make them, they just sold them for Missouri Meerschaum. Marilyn from MM said the size cobs required for such a pipe are a rarity and they can only do them every few years. Those pictured are the 2015 and 2018.
