If tobacco sales suddenly became illegal and you were only left with what you had in your cellar, how long would your stock last you?
Note: Tried to type the question in the subject but ran out of characters. Current subject is what popped in my head after that.

I'd like to think I have a pretty large cellar. Plus, I only smoke a couple bowls a day. So I think I could easily make it a decade.

I'm 36... so my cellar has got a ways to go before it will last a life time.

Global Thermonuclear War? My cellar will outlast me. How about a nice game of chess? That was the first thing that popped into MY head. Movie "Wargames". Oh, you were quoting WOPR. As long as we're doing this ; Gen. Beringer: Well hell, I'd piss on a spark plug if I thought it would do any good!

I like chess, have played it since I was 6, and still suck. I havent played it with a pipe in hand, but I'm sure I'd be better.
My tobacco cellar will last me a little while, I'm 36 as well. Since I plan on living to at least 200, I have a long way to go.

I got very good at chess in junior high and high school. Since then I am embarrassed every time I try to play.

I thought this was going to be a thread about sick ways to kill people... I'm pleasantly surprised.
I did the calculation and worked out that it would be around 16 years.

Mine would outlast me based on current smoking levels, probably two times over, considering that I am 58, and the mortality rate for a male is 77.

Based on smoking roughly 2oz. a week and possibly living to 80 I would have about 20 lbs left over after my demise.

I got very good at chess in junior high and high school. Since then I am embarrassed every time I try to play. Haha same here, except I don't know if I'd say I was ever "very good". I'm certainly out of practice now though; a few years ago I taught my eldest boy (he'd have been around 11), and the little bugger beat me on the 2nd game, and I did NOT let him win. Those odd moments of pride mingled with embarrassment.. As far as cellars go, I've been building one in an unintentional manner. This time around with the pipe, I've been buying tins to try many different blends, and jarring them up. So I don't have more than a few ounces of any one blend, but the stacks of jars are getting high. It's almost all lat/oriental blends, and I've definitely found some I do need to start cellaring in earnest. I was just in Boston and came home with many 1oz bags of Peretti's lat and oriental blends... very excited to try them! In terms of time, I'd say I've got a few years worth "cellared". I only smoke a few pipes a week.

These are from about three months ago. I've increased it by at least 50% since then both tins and bulk. I started smoking a pipe again in October and it has become an obsession aquiring tobacco.

I started smoking a pipe again in October and it has become an obsession aquiring tobacco. Wow, I'm impressed. I'd have to do a count for an accurate number but I've got at least 40lb cellared. Mostly bulk blends but have about 24 tins that include MB Plumcake, SPC Mississippi River & Plum Pudding. Thanks to the new Customs laws here re; importing of tobacco without a licence, I've started growing my own to supplement my stash. At 59yo, figuring my future needs is something that I've been considering of late. Twenty years ago Dr's gave me 2-3 years to live. I've been suffering from a nasty virus for a few weeks, where one night several days ago I thought my number was up [my body temp dropped to 32.5*C - 90.5*F] Funny thing was was that I had the thought that I should have smoked more of my SPC stash, that leaving it behind would be such a waste, lol.

I think I could make mine last my lifetime, but I would change the rate I smoke it up to much less per day.

I've done some actual calculating on this, when I was trying to figure out how aggressively I needed to stock my cellar. The starting point is how much tobacco per bowl. This measurement makes a lot of difference. I took an average size bowl and a my largest bowl and packed them in a normal fashion with three different types of tobacco to work out the average. I settled on 2.5 grams or 0.088 oz. I built a model with 2-5 bowls per day and calculated tobacco consumption for each week using seven day weeks. Then calculated per year and with the value on how many pounds in my cellar, I know roughly how many years of tobacco I have for the 2 - 5 bowls/day. All this is in a spreadsheet so it is easy to manipulate the model with different variables.
While I'm sure this all sounds extremely nerdy, it was a fun exercise and told me I needed more tobacco! Imagine that. As with any predictive model, there are a lot of assumptions. I have about a 90 percent degree of confidence in the model, which is close enough for me. FWIW: My 60 lbs of tobacco will last me somewhere around 10 years at 3 bowls per day. If you want a copy of the spreadsheet, let me know.

Current state of the cellar in its temporary home in a basement closet. We will see how things shake out after the big remodel project is complete. Like kbareit, I've been at this accumulation for a year. Note that this is a rather humble cellar compared to some who have been at it far longer.

I don't have more than 20 lbs I don't think, but it could be more. I just don't smoke that much. At least 2 pounds are stuff I never intend to smoke, Christmas Cheer and such. I bought it before I tasted it. I will probably put away a couple more pounds of Wilke just in case I live longer than expected. I am afraid that if I put my stash all together in one place to really get a handle on it, my wife might see it and there will be a lot of leftover tobacco. I find stuff that I have forgotten about all the time.

Very nice cellars folks! Glad I started back in 2013 when McClelland was in operation and all was well as far as buying tobacco goes. Happy with my McC stash...although probably most of the McC stash will go to Josh either as gifted or trade.

Besides the tobacco I have put away which would last a very long time, I also have a pretty decent seed collection.
