That was what my oldest grand-kid, Sedona told me as she started kindergarten today...I will see you later as she pursed her butterfly kiss lips my way. I skipped work today when I realized that the day was upon me, followed by breakfast at First Watch.

It's nice you got to be there for her first day. I never got to be there for any of my kids and my grandkids live 5 hours away. Hopefully my other 3 kids that live in the area will give me some grandkids so I can enjoy moments like that.

Same here...I was always on the road, but my wife worked for the private schools our kids went to, so at least she was there.

Yeah..my son was a one man Jihadi (not religiously, just in action)...then he decided he did not want to live under my rules, so he decided to join the Marines....lucky he made it to MCRD San Diego, but they gave him a reality check.

Sedona......! I can't talk. I have great great nephews named Callisto and Callahan. I call the last one Harry and it irritates his mom. Cute little bugger with a huge mop of blonde curls. Sedona is a cute kid. Maybe she will be a vortex scientist.

It happens so fast! Seems like only yesterday when she was 2 or 3 and chasing Milo around my living room. It's awesome you were able to take the time off and enjoy the momentous occasion. Side note ... while Sedona has become synonymous with New Age, aliens and vortices the origins are much different. Sedona Schnebly was a tough as nails pioneer woman whose story is worth a read. sedonamuseum.org/historyofsedona/

I remember when my daughter was that age. I would arrive from work and she would run to me, saying "DADDY! DADDY! DADDY!!!!"

A lot of towns In Texas that have great histories have turned into New Age tourist traps.

Very much appreciate you posting this...brought mist to my eyes remembering her and the fact that she is gone now.

It certainly is a fantastic place, Walt. If you want to see some of Sedona before all the growth, watch "3:10 to Yuma" (1957). There are some sweeping views of valleys that are now filled with businesses and homes.

We could see some homes along the river in Verde Canyon from the train and it looks like we could enjoy living there. I've been looking at real estate in Red River NM. More Texas than Texas these days.

More Texas than Texas these days. Red River is amazing. I don't know about how it is during ski season. It could be a tourist madhouse those months. But not so in the summer. I've only been there during summer and I love the quiet vibe and surrounding country. The watch out for falling cows sign as you head out of the area is a hoot too. š

I've done the mountain living thing and it's nice ... for awhile. Our heater ran, at some point in the day, for almost 8 months out of the year in Flagstaff. Over time, I really got tired of cold and snow even though the Summers are great.

We could sell our home in Houston and throw in another 40 Gs and get a nicer home near Red River and Cimarron that would require less maintenance than our heavily wooded lot hear. Main concerns are heating costs and medical care. We love the mountains and we could enjoy our final years more away from the heavy traffic and lack of the culture we grew up with. Also looking at northern Louisiana and North Central Texas. My Choctaw tribal member application could move us to one side or the other near the Red River. (Totally free medical care)

But, as you suggest, I have only been there as a visitor and never as a resident.

Over time, I really got tired of cold and snow even though the Summers are great. I hear you. I see that condos are very affordable and can be rented out for enough to pay for themselves when not in residence. Lots of friends we stayed with in Colorado and New Mexico had serious heating issues though they weren't in areas that got a lot of snow. Insulation and tight construction is the keyword. Winters are great down here.

I hate to be assaulted by angry political signs in almost every store we visited.

I love the Flagstaff area, but the town itself is very unfriendly to us politically. I hate to be assaulted by angry political signs in almost every store we visited. I saw political signs in the Bisbee Arizona area, prominently posted at the door where you cannot avoid it stating their political positionā... I cannot say they were angry, but if they feel it is their duty to politicize their trinkets, it is my duty to move on. I am there for rest and relaxation and a respite from the political nonsense, regardless of philosophy ... I would do the same for any business of any political affiliation or crusade. A stupid business model for paying the light bill.
