Tomorrow evening the better half and I leave for a weeks visit with our friend in lakeview Florida. we're taking Amtrack ,so it'll be two adventures for me ,as I've never been to Florida, nor have I been on a train. looking forward to some fun times and some quiet time too {all in our sixties you know}...packed the suitcase ,loaded the pipe bag with a meer-lined "Briar Delux" and two older Grabows ,and three tobaccos...put some extra coin on the money clip..got three Clive Cussler novels for the slower moments. the wife never takes a drink until she get in the same room with her old friend; then it's Unreal!! I can't wait  , she's been telling what a fool I made of myself for 42 years ,and payback is hell! Longest I've ever been away from my 4 legged children; our Shiba-inu will be fine but ,my son, Buster Brown the beagle, lost his sight a year ago and, even though I have a great young lady watching them ,he'll still be on my mind the whole time. I just hope there is a tobacco shop nearby. |

Enjoy the trip! It's good knowing that your furry family members are being well taken care of, that always eased my mind.
I had a Basset Hound named "Buster Brown." He was something alright... I'll never own a basset again.

Pipe shops in Florida are problematic with the 85% wholesale tax. Pipe Den half an hour north in Vero Beach are great people. There is someone else over there with a ton of pipes,forgot who, but tobacco is as I said.

The last time I was on Amtrak was in the eighties, I was able to smoke my Meerschaum pipe on board, and I had the company of a young hot nurse to have a good time with... Oakland> Salt Lake.
And you could ride on the decks open air between the cars
No smoking on trains anymore, and I doubt that you can ride in the open air... that sucks.
Regardless, you should have a good time, riding the rails sure beats driving.

Enjoy your visit....too bad you can't take your doggies. |

the news about Florida's tobacco tax is a bummer ,but one to be expected in today's "smoke free" world...in a land that was founded largely by the tobacco trade, nothing pisses me off more than those big signs that so proudly say "SMOKE FREE".
