On August 4, the U.S. Coast Guard celebrates its 229th Birthday, tracing its founding to Aug. 4, 1790 when the Revenue Cutter Service was created. The smallest of the military services with about 48,000 officers and enlisted, the motto is Semper Paratus - Alway Ready (or Always Prepared) when it's motto should be Simply Forgotus when it comes to funding. Here's a link to an interesting article about one Coast Guard cutter. www.latimes.com/world-natio...WymTVdCH9dl7gsoQ39jIpiYLUNiyeSSZG-z-8i7WviX1I

Last time I was involved with the Coast Guard was off the coast of Bimini heading back to the coast of Miami...they were busy firing on a fastboat that was busy throwing bales over the side...we didn't stop to aid either of them.

Great people the Coast Guard, often maligned, but seeing them run boats in Washington State thru the Surf, damn it took courage !

Having sailed for years on San Francisco Bay and offshore the Golden Gate, I seen them in action helping boaters and recovering jumpers from the GG Bridge. A fine bunch of peopole in a noble service.

There is a huge Coast Guard festival near here in Grand Haven Mi this week. I haven’t been years because there tends to be too many people for me. Still cool for them. I might have to bring my son when he is a bit older.
