Sir Ernest Shackleton lead an expedition to cross the Antartic (1914-1917). Unfortunately they never made it and were shipwrecked for 20 months. The thing they missed the most was tobacco. Read an interesting account here.

Read it and agree...last thing I would want to be without is my tobacco and pipe.

What an amazing story! Sad sadness, some laughs at their attempts to replicate tobacco, and some very, very, hardy men!

I have the book titled "south with endurance" and it is Frank Hurkey's photo record of the failed expidition. Outstanding coffee table book!

Same thing happened with the HMS Erebus. They got stranded in the NW Passage and ran out of tobacco. Whole expedition went insane and murdered each other. 😉

Cool story. I'm glad it had a happy ending. Anyone else laugh when the captain got back to men who had been starving on an island for months and threw cigarettes at them? Hahahaha

Endurance is a wonderful book on one of the greatest survival and leadership tales of all time. Frank Worsley's navigation to South Georgia is a legendary feat among today's sailors and scholars of traditional navigation; it's entirely possible that there has not been a person alive for several generations now who could do what he did.
