Try a red or orange VA instead of a yellow. Red = sweet when it comes to Virginia's in my book. I know some others, Pease for example, do not agree with this but for me the red is where it is at. I also understand that the top of the Virginia plant is milder and sweeter. I cant smoke MacBaren VA's - no clue if it is because of this or their mold prevention or what. I agree! Sutliff 515 is like candy, when it has some age on it. Heck, it's good brand new, but with some age, it's amazing. I tried a Pease yellow Virginia blend (cannot recall the name, as I gave it to a friend), but I could not develop a taste for it.

Also, 515 tastes different depending on how much you dry it, to me anyway.

No I havent. But I'll dig it out this weekend when I jar up some incoming tobacco.
I didnt realize it's been that long. It's been in the same airtight bag that you sent it in. I'm sure some magic has happened by now.

I've been smoking the stoved version off and on and it's really smoothing out with age.

Most of the straight Virginias I have tried smelled like Ketchup. A McClelland fan?

I love red Virginias, but they can bite my tongue like a rabid dog. However, if they're well stoved or mixed with burley and/or perique, they're no problem.

I love MacBaren VA No 1. (getting ready to order another lb today). When sharing, I always warn people to go slow, but I don't have any trouble with tongue bite with it. I get more tongue bite with aromatics.

I'll try stoving and pressing an ounce in my new noodle maker.

A couple of months back, there were reviews and feedback on Amphora Virginia Blend. I tried it and also reordered it, finding it very pipe smoker friendly.

I've been meaning to try that one. I was impressed with Amphora Original, but neither one of them has found it's way to my cart.

Ropes are made with whole leaf tobacco. You stack the leaves and then begin rolling like a cigar. To make a twist ... twist that same rope lightly from both ends once it's rolled up and the whole thing begins to "pretzel".
This is different from "spun" tobacco, such as Escudo, which is done with a machine.

Gargle with baking soda before you light up! Or, so I hear. Now Jason... I don't think that is right. Gargle with some cinnamon and caynne pepper mixed in tequila. Or, so I heard. I learned quickly after tongue bite proceed with caution on the spicy foods... tongue bite really opens up my receptors.

There's no doubt that people that puff a pipe like a freight train will experience tongue bite from even the mellowest of blends.
But by and large, for the experienced lunters, the main reason for tongue bite is Ph imbalance.
Younger brighter Virginias absolutely light me up. No matter the cadence, whether or not if I drink apple juice or red wine with them (in an effort to neutralize the ph imbalance) the tongue bite is terrible.
So, in the end, I've decided it's simply not worth all the effort and discomfort. There are virtually hundreds of blends out there that taste great and that don't bite me at all. Why even bother with blends that disagree with my ph?
Just my $0.02

As I've stated here, on numerous occasions, I've been smoking cigars and pipes since the early 80's. The General that introduced me to both helped me realize that, although our hobby can be a very social affair, in the end it's about what you as and individual enjoys and wants to pursue. I've never been one to get caught up in fads. There are many out there that smoke cigars because it's the "IN" thing to do. They're too caught up in smoking the popular stick and too worried about smoking at the popular places, adhering to the so called "right way to light and smoke" a cigar. I myself hardly ever use a cigar cutter. I learned a good technique for biting (nibbling) the end off of a cigar, and almost always do exactly that. Very "Hoppy" IPA's seem to be all the rage for many beer drinkers out there. For me though, the hops overwhelm the beer, and I can hardly taste anything else. So, in the end, I encourage everyone out there to be true to themselves and not to worry about what everybody else is doing. As always... ymmv Dino

I send cheers to you and your 98 cents worth of added comments!! PS I suppose, if one is being particular about the maths, it is a buck worth for a total of one dollar and two cents.😁 I did that without a calculator. 😁 😁
