When I was younger, I would get offended when someone said my pipe made me look like an old man. Now, I am almost 70. Those comments don't bother me anymore. I just sit back, enjoy my pipe, and remember those who didn't have the privilege of living this long.

I've been a pipe smoker since July 1970. Entering college the Fall of 1970 it was not unusual to see students and teachers alike smoking pipes on campus. I can't remember anyone commenting on it making me appear older but, at the time, I didn't really care what anyone thought about my pipe smoking anyway.
Now it's a rare thing to see someone with a pipe outside of the B&M and the pipe club so I'm probably more of a curiosity than anything else.

A young lady once told me that she liked my pipe.Then she told me that I reminded me of her grandfather..I was only about 30 years old and that wasn't the reaction I was hoping for.That was many moons ago..As a song says..When I wore a younger man's clothes.

I like that the pipe brings me back to a previous era. If it makes me look older than I am, that's fine to me. If it gives me the appearance of being wise then that's a bonus.

That doesn't necessarily mean she thinks you look older. A couple of years ago, I was sitting on the back of my truck having a pipe (McClelland's 221B Honeydew) while the wife was inside shopping. An "older-than-me woman" stopped by and said I reminded her of her grandfather. She then said, "He would sit on the porch and smoke something that smelled just like that. I really miss him...) I just said "Thank You." |

I haven't had comments about smoking my pipe from others but I do get a lot of looks like I'm smoking something other than tobacco in it.
