My Samsung 5 is old but I'm hanging on to it as long as I can..About a month ago though it started not charging right..Then a couple days ago it quit charging altogether..Now what to..All I do on a phone is make a few calls..Really I just have it in the case of an emergency.I don't use a phone enough to pay almost a thousand bucks for one let alone try to learn how to use it..Probably go back to a flip phone..Then my wife suggested that it could just be the charger had given up the ghost..She was right..I paid 10 bucks for a new charger..Now my old Samsung 5 has an extended life..I don't know how long it will be though before I'm faced with this phone decision for real.

Glad you got it figured out Larry at a nominal cost...be careful on plugging it in and taking the cord out, if you jack up the charging port, the phone is useless...and I think it is cost prohibitive to fix.
My son bought me the Iphone 7Plus, after seeing what he paid for it I hope it lasts a long time also,...I had a Samsung 5 also and always kept it in an Otter Box Defender series...when I traded it for an upgrade, the phone was pristine. Most of the guys I know that like carrying their cell phone without a case have cracked screens, and beat up looking phones.
They look cooler than me though, with an uncased phone.

I finally upgraded to the Samsung S-7 that allows for wireless charging, which solves the problem of wearing out the charging port. +1 on the Otter Box, it has saved my phone more than a few times.

Still using my old Samsung flip phone my wife and I got one (actually 2) right after 9/11///since we both worked in state government and the chances of a bombing was higher than a regular business...probably since state government is a source of aggravation to many, including use those that had to work for state government. Flip phone is still working and still only costing me $15.00 every 2 months for a new card.

Smart of your wife to think to get a new charger as it's the battery that's been designed to fail [planned obsolescence] My phone is mainly used for texting and receiving calls. It's an older model, one of the first touch screens that's much smaller than the latest ones. It cost me $50 brand new. As soon as a new model is introduced the previous ones prices drop considerably.

Otterbox's have saved a few of my phones from falls off a roof. I buy one the same day I get a new phone.
My kids go through chargers about once a month. I still have one from 2 years ago that works just fine... I dont get it.

Charges, especially cables, get misused all the time. My wife changes them every couple of month. The secret is to buy a good one. By the way - original cable, provided by manufacturer, is rarely a good cable. Best to buy a braided cable with lowest gauge # possible. I buy 22. 24 is ok too.

All my iPhone charge cables have lasted for years, or at least until I lose them or they are stolen! However, braided cables with thick gauge wires sound good. Recommendation?
