About 6 months ago Smokingpipes used to send me a small pack of Mac Baren pipe cleaners with my orders. Same here. And 4noggins. And tobaccopipes. Just little packs but they add up. My OCD calls for clean pipes but wow, some of you guys play it fast and loose with cleaners! One will take care of approx. 3-5 stems for me, stem removed and cleaner pulled out through the tenon. One or two q tips for the shank/draught/bowl. Full disclosure though, my bowls border on crispy, are packed loose, and sipped dry. Most of the discarded cleaners still look new but OCD suggests pitching. You certainly are frugal in pipe cleaner use, and I commend you, but one pipe cleaner per smoke, my pipe cleaners look like they have been drug through a sewer. But you are a wasteful-son of a gun on Q-Tips... hang your head in shame.

I will admit to occasionally using churchwarden cleaners and clipping the tip once it's soiled. Get through about 6-10 stems per cleaner that way. And 500 q tips for $2 covers me for a while. For illustrative purposes here's the cleaner I'm using currently, has cleaned 3 or 4 pipes already, couple more and I'll pitch it.

Well, as long a we are confessing. . . . . I clip and twist. If there is a couple of inches of clean pipe cleaner, I scissor it and join clipped sections together. Send the possee!

When I was angry, young, and poor this was executed on bass strings. Pipe cleaners are a drop in the bucket compared to the price on those. I even boiled them to extend use. Yes, frugal.

I should own stock in BJ Longs! They're a private company. Express enough interest there might come an IPO...

I often use 3 pipe cleaners on a single pipe. It's complicated.

They're a private company. Express enough interest there might come an IPO... I don't think that this is the right time for a pipe cleaner company to have an IPO

I look at pipe cleaner usage as I do dental floss, and they don’t get used for the next meal, whether it is food or a smoke... once used, discard. I do not feel wasteful of either.

A related issue is how dirty particular tobaccos smoke/finish. Latakia is a prime offender, due to the way it is processed, I suppose.

Relative newbie here, but I've heard it isn't a good idea to remove the stems frequently. Thoughts?
I usually just run a cleaner all the way to the bowl a couple times.

The question is whether or not you want to take the risk.

it don’t matter if you sip your pipe or gulp it down, you still need to clean it, & pipe cleaners are the only way to clean a pipe the right way. I have 6 churchwardens that are my workhorse pipes so I buy a lot of the long cleaners in 52 feet coils & cut them into 10-12 inch lengths. I also have the standard short stem pipes that I clean using the same coils cut in shorter lengths. So I go through a lot of cleaners if I clean my pipes after each use. Sometimes I will wait to clean a pipe after 2-3 smokes even though it starts to taste bad at that point, But I use less cleaners and save a few bucks. Putting up with bad tasting pipes to save a few bucks does not seem right to me, even though at times I do it. So yes, I go through tons of pipe cleaners & Oh yes, Q-Tips too. Can I afford pipe cleaners? I think I can when compared to the cost of let’s say my $300.00 pipe or even my $150.00 Peterson. So what exactly am I saying? I guess I just want to hear from you guys and see how you all deal with the amount of pipe cleaners you use and if it matters to you or not. I’m a newbie and want some feedback on the pipe cleaners topic. Thanks guys. Pipe cleaners make a huge difference in your smoking experience. I am very partial to Vauen pipe cleaners ( both for church wardens and standard pipes. They are the best cleaners in existence, IMO.

It's been several years, but I can remember when pipe cleaners were a free comp on Internet orders. They have been replaced by giant warning labels!

The question is whether or not you want to take the risk. Maybe it's finesse or luck but I dismantle pipes after a bowl to clean and have never had an issue. The pipes are warm to the touch at best though, never "hot". I have known people to crack shanks through ham handed pushing/pulling motions regardless of duration between the last smoke. Gentle twist and pull has never harmed any of mine however

I use regulars the most, followed by bristles and fluffys are VG on cobs.
Also, introduced in the last month, B.J. Long 9" Regular are an ideal size for semi-churchwarden pipes.

I just ordered 200+ BJ Long's from Amazon. Good for cleaning, good for dye.

I'm a BJ long fan myself. The only non-bj longs I have are the ones I received free.
