it don’t matter if you sip your pipe or gulp it down, you still need to clean it, & pipe cleaners are the only way to clean a pipe the right way. I have 6 churchwardens that are my workhorse pipes so I buy a lot of the long cleaners in 52 feet coils & cut them into 10-12 inch lengths. I also have the standard short stem pipes that I clean using the same coils cut in shorter lengths. So I go through a lot of cleaners if I clean my pipes after each use. Sometimes I will wait to clean a pipe after 2-3 smokes even though it starts to taste bad at that point, But I use less cleaners and save a few bucks.
Putting up with bad tasting pipes to save a few bucks does not seem right to me, even though at times I do it. So yes, I go through tons of pipe cleaners & Oh yes, Q-Tips too. Can I afford pipe cleaners? I think I can when compared to the cost of let’s say my $300.00 pipe or even my $150.00 Peterson. So what exactly am I saying? I guess I just want to hear from you guys and see how you all deal with the amount of pipe cleaners you use and if it matters to you or not. I’m a newbie and want some feedback on the pipe cleaners topic. Thanks guys.

Pipe cleaners are cheap no need for a sour pipe. I use em right after I smoke even if I plan on using the same pipe again.

A pack of 50 pipe cleaners costs $2.50aud here that last me over two weeks. Once a pipe cleaner is a bit mucky from running it down the mouthpiece to the bowl, I keep it on my ashtray to use the clean end for clearing the draught hole so that I get full use from one. I'm in the habit of cleaning the stem after every bowl.

I just finished a yearly+ order for pipe cleaners. I have no churchwardens or really long stemmed pipes. I order 50 packs at a time at $2.00 per pack for B.J. Long 6" regular. I may use a pipe cleaner for a couple of pipes depending on the crap on the cleaner. I have a small apothecary type bottle that has Rum in it. I dip the end of the cleaner into the rum (about ½") and run it through the stem first and then the shank of the pipe. I use a half sheet of paper towel cut in 2 pieces. Which I wipe the tenon with and catch any dripping from the cleaner. I do this pretty much immediately after smoking a pipe. I'm retired and tired and I don't have any thing else to do, or want to do, so that is my pipe smoking day.

I supplement PC's with small squares of paper towel for shank, bowl and recessed stems. I do a first pass with them, then follow with pipe cleaner.

They're cheap. Use them. Sometimes I use more than one on a pipe if say a gurgle develops. Pro Tip: Save your used/dirty pipe cleaners and donate to others for crafting projects. They have that aged/distressed look that's so popular.

I use one cleaner per pipe most of the time. During the smoke, I swab the moisture At the end, I do another swab of the stem, fold it over and swab the bowl. For cleaning sessions, I found a nifty product from Tupperware that works really well at squeegeeing, excess Everclear from the pipe cleaner. I have yet to ever have a self sealing failure on my cup. You can find them on Ebay.... If so inclined, I would only buy new ones.thebriarpatchforum.com/thread/2331/handy-option-everclear-application

They're cheap and I use them like they are cheap. Every few orders I add 5-10 packs of regular or tapered. Right now... I have A LOT and still buy more.

I agree with what you do with yours I just let them sit about 20/30 minutes in the pipe before I pull them out. Been doing it that way for over 40 years now and it works for me !

Whenever I load a bowl I set a PC out and use it for moisture control while smoking and then use it to clean the stem when finished. I double it up and clean the draught hole and double it again and clean the shank. I do this every time I smoke and it works well for me so far.

From my local tobacconist. I've been a regular customer for nearly twenty years. He helped me through a really tough time years back when he'd extend me credit. As I no longer buy tobacco from him, I make a point of buying my Bic lighters and pipe cleaners there. Although I could buy pipe cleaners cheaper on-line, the postage would negate any savings. And really, it works out at around $1 a week for pipe cleaners so it's not a biggie.

I think because I smoke my churchwardens (they go with my wizard persona) a lot, I go through a lot of cleaners. Like I said, I buy the 52 feet coils and cut them to 10-12 inch lengths. It just seems like to me that I go through the coils pretty quick. I also smoke 7 or 8 bowls a day. I try cutting down on my bowls per day, but then I find myself reaching for another bowl. I am retired and do a lot of writing & reading - the churchwarden go great with the reading. Reading through this thread has thought me a lot and given me great info about how to use the cleaners in better ways. Thank you all for your input. I will continue reading and learning.

A few years back someone on here told me that when one of the online stores is having their take an extra ??% off your entire order sales. Which sadly don’t happen as often anymore. That’s always a good time to stock up. I heeded that advice, and load up. But it is also the one thing I will make sure I buy one or two when I visit a brick and mortar, especially if I don’t buy anything else

PC’s, part of the cost of doing business. I use three per pipe after each smoke. A regular for the stem, a bristle for the shank, doubled over if the shank will accommodate, and an extra fluffy for the shank and bowl. Overkill? Maybe, but PC’s are relatively cheap. I buy BJ Long’s in bulk and on sale if possible. Often the bristle cleaners are cheaper to buy the 12” version and cut them in half. It is hard to have too many PC’s.

I use them religiously after every smoke and do a full clean every 2-3 smokes with PC's and q-tips, using some high-end booze (I don't drink but I have friends and family that do and leave liquor at my house)

I clean with pipe cleaners after every smoke. I don't wait for the pipe to cool down much either (but 1 minute in the Irish weather and the heat is gone).
Stem first, with the clean pc, and then the shank, making a wee crank shaft. Then double it over and do the bowl.

Thanks McWiggins! Hit the P&C sale and stocked up on pipe cleaners (and 1.5# of tobacco, for the free shipping, of course)!

It's been several years, but I can remember when pipe cleaners were a free comp on Internet orders.

About 6 months ago Smokingpipes used to send me a small pack of Mac Baren pipe cleaners with my orders. Same here. And 4noggins. And tobaccopipes. Just little packs but they add up. My OCD calls for clean pipes but wow, some of you guys play it fast and loose with cleaners! One will take care of approx. 3-5 stems for me, stem removed and cleaner pulled out through the tenon. One or two q tips for the shank/draught/bowl. Full disclosure though, my bowls border on crispy, are packed loose, and sipped dry. Most of the discarded cleaners still look new but OCD suggests pitching.
