Very well written, but he has had plenty of practice! I never knew about them removing the cigar from Churchill’s picture. I would like to debate the grounds for doing so by whoever “reasoned” that it was wise to do.

I'm not sure which portrait of Churchill is referred to here, but probably the most famous one is with him scowling taken by well know photographer Yousuf Karsh in 1941. He was given 2 min. to take the photo and Churchill was already grumpy. He lit up his cigar which Karsh tried to get him to put down, but he wouldn't. So with his camera all set up, Karsh went up to him and plucked it from his mouth, ran back and took the photo. The expression on Churchill's face says it all.

I wonder what Churchill would have to say? How many gave their life fighting to end fascism and communism? What an insult to their memory!

Their actively trying to alter that image. That last Churchill movie as an example. Even Frosty the Snowman is deemed unsuitable with his corn cob pipe.

Charlie, thanks for clearing up which photo was altered. Why would someone do that, almost everyone remembers Churchill smoked cigars. Fargin iceholes! No photo was altered! Karsh took the cigar out of his mouth THEN took the photo! No plot against smoking just a photographers dessision of what he wanted !

Yes, that's true in that particular moment in time, but there has been an active selective process the past decade in picturing Churchill without a cigar.

Yes, that's true in that particular moment in time, but there has been an active selective process the past decade in picturing Churchill without a cigar. To portray him without a cigar is like portraying dean Martin without a drink. Although, Churchill could probably drink most of us under the table....that guy had his man card punched early in life... It undoubtedly helped him prepare for the political storms later in life, I can imagine that a fine cigar really offered an escape from what he faced.
