Hi all; got a quick question, I am thinking about buying a Dr. Grabow pipe after reading the revues on the Patch. How often do you change the filter, after each bowl or two or longer? Also ,a tip, if the tenon is a little lose on a pipe, wrap a small piece of plumbers tape around it. the white kind, I find it works better then bees wax and last longer. Thats all for now . thank-you for responding. Herman

Change the filter after every smoke.

Personally, I remove the filter and never look back. They can be smoked with or without the adapter for this purpose as well.

I don't use the filters and am happy with how they smoke. Try it with and without and see which you prefer.

Every/every other smoke... you decide based on gunk buildup, moisture, draw resistance, carry-over flavor, degree of motivation/laziness, etc. Don't let it become a nagging thing... do or don't, now or later.

Except in this case. Try a filter, try without. Decide what you like. Im not a filter guy but if I were, I think I'd change after a smoke or two. I like a clean pipe so I have a clean smoke.

When I first started I much preferred filtered pipes. I was still learning how to pack the pipe, and I disliked sucking up bits of tobacco. As my packing technique has improved, I'm slowly transitioning to not using a filter. The nice thing about filtered pipes is that if you don't want to use a filter, either leave it out or get an adapter. With non-filtered pipes, you don't have the option of adding a filter if you wanted.

I've been known to put a wispy little tuft of 100% cotton in there. Works just like a filter for non-filter designs. I also use screens from time-to-time.

When I first got started, I bought some pipes on Ebay from a german seller. Not knowing any better. They all had 9mm filters. But this was ok. I was remembering from days long ago always seeing the Medico and Dr Grabow filters at the store. So I thought pipes were supposed to have filters. Well now move 3 years ahead. Today I am using filters 6mm balsa and 9mm charcoal and not using them. Those pipes from Germany now have adapters if needed. Those Missouri Meer’s that can get filters do. I have discovered some blends I just like better with a filter. Sometimes I’m just in the mood for something more in your face. So no filter then. And now to the point of this thread. 😆 I change them after every smoke

This led to a very loose stem that was a huge PITA. Plumbers tape came in very handy. A better way I found to fix a very loose stem, is to wipe a thin smear of nail polish on the tenon. Allow to dry for at least a couple of hours before reattaching to the pipe. If still loose, give another thin smear. It works a charm. Bees wax works well for stems that are just a tiny bit loose but my Peterson was past that point. Filters have their place but as I choose blends that are no stronger than mild to medium, I don't need them. [Pus I don't like how they inhibit the draw] When I was using them I'd change the filter every other bowl.

If I use a filter I replace after every smoke...but I rarely use a filter.
Sometimes the filter brings out the flavour in the smoke though.
