I have so many tobaccos I have never tried yet and I want to sample them. It started me wondering if you guys have a quick and simple way to sample a tobacco? Or do you just pack up a small bowl?

Go big or go home.
I pack a full bowl. I try to smoke it to the bottom. There are very few that I havent been able to finish.

I do the same as Josh. Some use a clay pipe for this process. They are great for sampling tobaccos.

I take a pinch and place it between the cheek and gum for a few minutes. The essence of the tobacco comes out. I had a tobacconist show me this, doing it this way I don't have to smoke multiple bowls of multiple tobaccos

I find blends sometimes don’t taste the same in different pipes, so I never consider a blend truly tasted until I try a few pipes of the blend.

Why would you buy lots of tobacco that you had never tried? I never pack a small bowl, not even when I was still buying tobacco. A group 4 chamber is as small as I'll go. I've only came across two blends in thirty years that I despised.

Tobacco tins are like potato chips bet you cant buy just one. One to try two to cellar. Folks around here mostly have enough tobacco for forever. Some websites tout each new blend as the elusive unicorn fart and then everyone must play follow the leader me too. Until the next unicorn fart comes out and the process starts all over again.

After I hit 340 pounds I lost interest. Even had my online ship accounts cancelled. I always only bought one tin of something to try before shelling out money for more and if I liked it I would get 10-30 tins.

That's only 5 bowls per day for the next 30 years!
Thanks guys! I think I will just have to man up and smoke a few bowls.

I have a double bowled pipe with a built in switching mechanism located in the stem ( A side by side double barrel shotgun pipe.). I can smoke one bowl then the other, switch between the bowls for comparison or open them up to see how they meld .

I smoke two pipes daily and no one in my family has lived to see 65. I'm 45.

Purchased them on recommendations from folks here on the Patch. However what I generally do with most purchases (8 oz or more packaging) is transfer the tobacco to a mason jar and hold out a small portion for tasting. That way I get a taste of most new tobaccos I buy. Tins are touch and go. I have a number of old McClelland tins of tobaccos I haven't tasted but plan to open at a future date. That's kind of a fun process.

I have to smoke several bowls of a blend to know if I like it or not. Even then, I often go back later and try it again. Tastes change over time.

That took almost thirty years to collect. Less TAD and more putting away for a time when I couldn't afford it.

Most shops will let me try any tobacco I want as long as there is a jar or open tin laying around somewhere.
They're more than happy to let me pack a full bowl. Brick and mortars are irreplaceable.

And where is this, please? Can you smoke in the shop? In many B+M's neither is legal.

In many shops in Virginia and Pennsylvania you can smoke in the shop and samples are passed around all of the time, Not mentioning shops though because I don't want to get any brothers in trouble with this finicky government we have to deal with,
